thats the shut down player the leafs need? - senstroll
Well sure, but I didn't think the conversation was about what the Leafs need, or there would be no sense even mentioning those two ... might as well mention Stamkos!

the way the game is played today, you're not seeing Scott Stevens or Adam Foote anymore. look around the NHL. all the top guys on their teams are guys who can skate and move the puck. the one-dimensional stay-at-home guys are being filtered to the bottom of the depth chart. no one wants to play a stationary, one-dimensional defenceman 22 minutes per night anymore.
i remember going up, defencemen were always put into one of two categories: offensive or defensive. those lines have blurred now. |

i dont really have one.
I am skeptical its as simple as..going and getting a "shut down D"
i think its more important to change the system and the way the leafs play.. the chip/dump and chase...and D that are instructed to back up and defend when the puck is turned over does not work anymore.
using the players better..I dont think Dion is very good defensivly.. and him taking all the heavy minutes doesnt work well.
they basically need to just forget what they did last season.. once we see a new system/coach we can get a better idea of who is driving things. Last season they all looked aweful

I see Rielly/Gardiner being very important soon.. driving play and possession |

Yeah agree. Possession didn't matter 10 years ago because no one was able to do anything with the puck when they had it. |

If you mean just purely a defensive player, nothing else
Niklas Hjalmarsson is pretty good
Marc-Edouard Vlasic
Dan Girardi
Mark Methot
Dan Hamhuis
Francois Beauchemin in an Anaheim jersey
Willie Mitchell?
Zbynek Michalek
Dennis Seidenberg

yeah it's a pretty shallow barrel.
a few of those guys like MEV are outstanding skaters though and i would bet they have good possession metrics too. |

1) Cloutier
2) Esplen
3) Berger
4) Mirtle
