I have had this fight a few times.. In the end,, in Canada, we pay a lot of taxes.
- bixll

And we get a lot for those taxes.

Had this conversation with a friend from California a couple of nights ago.

When she delivered her first kid, there were minor complications. She had great medical insurance, and the whole thing cost her about $9,000. Without it, she would have been in the $60,000 range (she's actually going to scan her final bill and email it to me).

Considering my first daughter spend 3 days in ICU after delivery, and my wife spent about two weeks in the hospital in total, I'm pretty happy paying my taxes, thank you very much.

I don't think the Leafs can afford to put one of their worst players from last season on their powerplay in the hopes he might put up better numbers.

Clarkson is a guy that averages less than 20 goals per season (even before last year), the Leafs have better options than him to score goals on the powerplay. Give him the role he should have, despite his ridiculous contract, which is being a third liner with grit.

- Scabeh

We need a player making league minimum to wildly over achieve on the second line to balance out how bad Clarkson is while on the third line.

Absolutely love them.

Agreed, but do you think that's worth what you're paying him?
- RickJames77

If he can get back to being a high teens to 20ish kind of guy and putting up good possession numbers than he's a good 2nd liner. Good 2nd line wingers (UFA's) are making 5+ nowadays.

Lets hope he can get back to that - I'm not sure he can.

Stop being a boob man, and start being an ass man.

You are welcome.

I believe the primary reason for the bonus structure is that the bonuses are taxed a more favourable rate than salary.

Nonis/Loiselle should have realized the implication to a buyout and never signed it. Both should be fired for this contract structure.

And most of us will tell you that you're wrong. The truth is people were excited about having Clarkson in the lineup ....but, like you, most were cringing at the details of the contract.
- The Law

Oh i was excited for sure.. at the time I still believed that it was ok paying for intangibles and toughness, grit etc... I really believed the hype at the time.. and after his first 10-15 games was still willing to give him a chance..

but that fizzled out quickly.
overpaying for these types of intangible players is dumb

Interesting...bonuses here are just taxed as additional income.

We can, but the cap hit counts against us and with all those bonuses, it would be a huge cap burden for years to come:

EXT CAP HIT BREAKDOWN (for copying and pasting)

2015-16: $4,716,667
2016-17: $3,716,667
2017-18: $3,716,667
2018-19: $4,716,667
2019-20: $4,716,667
2020-21: $466,667
2021-22: $466,667
