Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Remembering Gene Hart, Quick Hits
- bmeltzer

My brother and I were at a game in that '95 lockout shortened season, Gene's last. He was walking up the steps, I'm assuming to the broadcast booth before the game, as my brother and I were early, we said hi to him. He was nice and made some small talk.

We asked him who he thought would win the Stanley Cup that year. Expecting to hear him say Philly, we were shocked to hear him say, "What out for New Jersey". Well, he was right.

Gene Hart was the best!

My friend played goalie for our soccer team. We played some pretty awful teams, so he wouldn't see much action during those games. He was known for being a bit strange, but he ordered a pizza during the game. No one even noticed he was on the phone. The pizza guy delivered it to him in net. Our coach was pretty angry

That's (frank)in hilarious

This reminds me of a not as funny story, so there's your warning.

Sophomore year we played tier 1 high school hockey and got (frank)ing thrashed. We were a really good tier 2 team that got bumped up, but those tier 1 teams...man...let's just say only a handful of my teammates could hang with them.

Anyway, we were playing one game out of league, so it was basically an exhibition. Like a crossover game. It was in some not so beautiful suburb or Philly. We were getting trounced. It was like 11-2...running clock....7 minutes left or so in the 3rd...there was a draw in our defensive zone and I was lined up as a winger on the right side of the circle, so I was about 6 feet from my goalie.

Ref is just about to drop the puck, and my goalie just goes "DOES ANYONE KNOW A GOOD PLACE TO GET CHICKEN? I'M HUNGRY AS (frank) AND COULD GO FOR SOME CHICKEN."

The referee- again...just about to drop the puck- skates over to our crease and gives our goalie directions to the nearest KFC. "You're gonna be in the parking lot, ok, so you're gonna bang a right, then that'll take you to a traffic light a mile or so down..." complete with hand motions and everything. I was on one knee laughing so hard tears were streaming down my face, and the ref finally goes "Got it?" and our goalie said "Yeah man thanks a lot. You're a lifesaver." and gives him a stick tap. Ref gives our goalie an ass pat and then blows the whistle, skates to the dot, and drops the puck.

One of the funniest hockey stories I have.

I'd rather be young and have some old time tell me about it. I'm the old timer, unfortnately. And even worse, fewer people care than I think. Some are even resentful and blame the organization's lack of a Cup on a "living in the past" mind-set.

Just a quick aside to that game. Everyone remembers the Van Impe hit that made them leave the ice, as he comes out and just charges the poop out of the Ruskie and goes high on him.

However, I remember something much more vividly. During the PK, with maybe 30 seconds left, Barber is protecting the puck in the Russian end on the near boards. A Russian player comes at him to take the puck, and Barber absolutely levels him with a (at the time) "legal" elbow. I mean, it looks like the guy just hits a brick wall. It would be 5 and a game nowadays, but it was a non-call at the time.

That's a funny story. Goalies and catchers are an odd bunch.

Our soccer team suffered the same a
Fate as your hockey team. We were tweeters. Too good for tier 2 but not good enough for tier 1

The Russians were getting pounded and the Van Impe hit just brought things to a head. (Steady Eddie's elbow on Valeri's, that is).

Yup. 2 years later, we were "impure" because we snagged a couple kids from a nearby school district. Brought us up to 9 and a goalie, where one of the 9 (frank)ed his shoulder up playing Junior B, so we had 8 and a goalie for most of the season. We were ineligible for playoffs, but that was my favorite year. Everyone was so tight on the team- coaches too- and we had so much fun. We went like 16-5 or something. Would have won the championship.

We went in to the home rink of the best team in the league- undefeated at the time- beat them 4-1 with 6 skaters and a goalie.

When the ONE, SINGLE SUB wasn't lying on his back on the bench, he'd be the waterboy for the flyby water squirts for the guys on the ice during the play. Ever skated a 6 minute shift as a forward?

That team got so pissed. It was great.

Absurd isn't it!?

But I need to ask, would you trade Streit plus something minor like a third or Akeson or Cousins or Rinaldo for Buff? I know people will say he has greater value but I just don't agree. He is a huge risk (pun intended).

Here's the whole sequence. The Barber one is at 0:38. In this video, it looks like more of a forearm/punch, but on my (clearer) DVD it looks like an elbow. Either way, I think it's the most vicious hit of the game.

In the same vein as "back to the studio" vs. broadcast team at intermissions, I largely dislike playoff hockey being covered by national commentators. Imagine Gene Hart not making the TV call for Game 6 versus Boston, so that every tape/DVD/etc. of it had some random national guy.
- jmatchett383

Sort of like Emrick who has dissed the Flyers on TV when working Devils games being at best tolerant when he covers games with the Flyers on national TV. Greatest sacrilege to have national guys like that especially if your team is in the finals and dribbles faint mocking praise if they win the cup

Moron combover halfwit, Emrick is someone who I hate.

My son played a game early last season and they showed up with 6 skaters. Early in the first my son takes a slap shot and knocks one of their defensemen out of the game. I have no idea why but at the beginning of the second they decided to just skate four players and keep a sub on the bench.

They beat our team 5-2.

I dont know without comparing contract terms, but I would be afraid of him running into one of his own players and ruining them like Lindros did with Coffey.

If it was honestly, Streit and Rinaldo for Buff, then yes, I'd do it. Buff is like Phaneuf, where I think he's overrated and wouldn't be the guy I'd pin my hopes and dreams on. But if it was a trade like that, where we're trading a 4W and an older #3/#4 offensive defenseman, then yeah, I'd go for it.
