Think they're both pretty much on notice now... Spott and Dubas, quite a duo if that's the succession plan.
- Tomahawk

I think it's Pretty early to assume that. Both Spott and Dubas have a long way to go before they see themselves in the top positions. Dubas more so then Spott.

Leafs have been making questionable moves all off season, don't think an advanced stats gurus going to save them at this point.

They didn't get married to Dave Bolland... that was the huge bullet dodged by them.

Komarov, Santorelli and Robidas are decent adds. Frattin and Polak, not so much, but at least they don't have a Clarkson-level commitment to either of them. Nylander was a great pick.

Honestly, they don't have a bad team. If they turned their kids loose and stopped asking super-talented guys like Kadri/Gardiner/Rielly to chip n' chase/play like plugs, I think they'd actually be pretty good. Letting the other team have the puck for 60%+ of the game because they don't want their players taking ANY risks is obviously not working.

Perhaps they were viewed as the issue?

The timing is odd, because there's fewer jobs and it has to give people a bit of pause as to why they were fired in late July and not months ago when the season ended.

My concern would remain, because exactly how much power and influence did Poulin have in determining the Leafs roster choices and moves? It's a valid question because Poulin often was the spokesman for Leafs issues, not just the Marlies.

We can talk about his wealth of experience. he was a great, smart player for many years. He did a very good job at Notre Dame in helping to save the program. But during his time with the Leafs, they were mostly a terrible team.

It's a very valid concern about him and his ability to be an effective member of the front office. It doesn't mean he can't come in and do a good job. It just means that during his time with the Leafs, they were mostly awful.

- Jsaquella

Over the last 40 years or so, the Leafs have been more frequently dysfunctional than functional. How much of the current dysfunction can be laid at the feet of Dave Poulin? I'm sure none of us knows for sure, but I certainly wouldnt hesitate to put him towards the top of my list of Asst GM candidates.

I do agree with Moatsey's obvious distaste for letting someone go after the majority of good job opportunities have passed into someone else's hands.

I didnt like it when the Pens did it to Bylsma, and I don't care for it now that its happened to Poulin.

Pretty bright and astute kid... had a hand in the Greyhounds big turnaround over the past couple of years.

TSN Interview with him... haven't heard many current NHL GM's speak this clearly and intelligently about the game:

I liked the interview. If I were a leafs fan I would be excited about the guy

His vast level of experience as a player, captain, collegiate coach, and a Vice President of Hockey Operations, as well as GM of the Toronto Marlies. Which is an AHL team which I would assume would be part of his responsibilities if he was hired as Assistant GM, which would put him in charge of the Phantoms.

Theres nothing there I didnt already know. Not going to label him excellent just because he has vast experience.

But you're perfectly willing to claim the Leafs missed the playoffs based on something you don't know? Would you label him as not being an excellent choice then? And if so, based on what?

The bolded is my concern. I don't know the level of Poulin's power or influence with Toronto. Nobody outside of Poulin, Nonis & the rest of the guys in the Leafs office probably knows for sure.

In Philly, Barry Hanrahan has or had an asst GM title, he primarily did cap work. When Holmgren was Asst GM he handled the draft. How many of us really know what Poulin did?

That's why I have concerns if the Flyers were to hire him.

I just hope whoever it is has an open mind and doesn't just dismiss things out of hand, because it's not how Sam Pollock did things

Personally I think Poulin is a great hockey guy and would be a good addition to this franchise. But, and this is just an opinion, I wonder if the Flyers are a bit tired of the criticism they receive because they "always" seem to hire ex players in to front office positions?

They probably don't care, but the thought has crossed my mind. If they DO hire Poulin, you can bet that narrative will rear its ugly head once again.

It also seems to me that a guy used to dealing with young players at Notre Dame would be a fine addition as GM of the Phantoms.

He oversaw the business end of the hockey operation. Coordinating the medical, training, equipment and scouting staffs. He dealt with the logistics mostly. He basically did everything Nonis didn't want to deal with including a large amount of media interaction. I'm not sure how much player personnel involvement he had but it never sounded like much.

That's why I'd be open to it, not sure how much influence he wielded. I'd talk to him, but I'd be hesitant to just toss him a gig.

That staff, as a whole, made a lot of very questionable decisions, both during Burke's reign and after. It will be interesting too see what impact Dubas has. He's a stats guy, which at least means he's open to new ideas, but he's awfully green in terms of front office experience.

It's a bold move.
