If you don't know then why make the statement? Whenever a new head guy comes in such as Shanahan, and there has been some bad years, change is inevitable.

You said he'd be an excellent addition, can you explain?

What would you want the new assistant GM's background to be in? Nascar maybe?

Looks like that is changing... they just hired the "Billy Beane of hockey" today:

His vast level of experience as a player, captain, collegiate coach, and a Vice President of Hockey Operations, as well as GM of the Toronto Marlies. Which is an AHL team which I would assume would be part of his responsibilities if he was hired as Assistant GM, which would put him in charge of the Phantoms.

Plenty of people in the business side of the sport that can deal in stuff like that. I want the assistant GM to have a hockey background if his responsibilities are going to be player development.

Hopefully for them it works out better than the hiring of a young Gord Stellick back in his day.

He will always be remembered for the Russ Courtnall for John Kordic deal.

Pretty bright and astute kid... had a hand in the Greyhounds big turnaround over the past couple of years.

TSN Interview with him... haven't heard many current NHL GM's speak this clearly and intelligently about the game:

I also know that whatever next career step he takes, Dave Poulin be just fine.

i've always been a huge poulin fan and was crushed when the flyers traded him to boston; so sad to see the dismantling of those mid 80s teams.

i also never liked him working for the leaves. time to come home, dave.

Dave Poulin is my favorite Flyer of all time. Its always a sad thing to see someone you respect and admire be shown the door.

It was also sad the browse the Leafs board here and read the Armchair geniuses claiming that Poulin is "clueless".

As much as I would love to see Dave Poulin come back to the orange and black, I hope he does whatever is in his best interests.

I agree, I always felt bad for Poulin here in the Toronto media. He seemed to be the guy on the front line always going on the radio talk shows to try and defend their crap team while Nonis ( or No -Nuts) hid in the back round.
Adding an Ex- team captain to the front office who played his heart out would be a nice addition.

Now.... Let's make an " on ice" addition !

He's just an assistant GM. I find it an interesting approach by Shannahan. Stripping the assistants from the coach and GM but leaving them in place. Essentially hiring their replacements. How soon will he feel comfortable moving his 28 yr old assistant GM into the GM chair? How soon does Spott take over the Leafs?

Poulin was on the radio this morning discussing the future of the club and now he's out. In the middle of the summer which means he missed out on the Flames job maybe. If the culture change meant these guys were gone than why wait?

Think they're both pretty much on notice now... Spott and Dubas, quite a duo if that's the succession plan.

Meanwhile, now matter if they're right or wrong, the Flyers continue to bring in the former Flyers.

This! I'm not saying it shouldn't never happen... but it should be open to the most qualified people to fill the positions. Think outside the box for a change. The Flyers rarely do that. And I'm also not saying it's right or wrong, on an individual basis... I'm just saying, there is other good candidates out there that weren't former Flyers personnel/players.

Perhaps they were viewed as the issue?

The timing is odd, because there's fewer jobs and it has to give people a bit of pause as to why they were fired in late July and not months ago when the season ended.

My concern would remain, because exactly how much power and influence did Poulin have in determining the Leafs roster choices and moves? It's a valid question because Poulin often was the spokesman for Leafs issues, not just the Marlies.

We can talk about his wealth of experience. he was a great, smart player for many years. He did a very good job at Notre Dame in helping to save the program. But during his time with the Leafs, they were mostly a terrible team.

It's a very valid concern about him and his ability to be an effective member of the front office. It doesn't mean he can't come in and do a good job. It just means that during his time with the Leafs, they were mostly awful.
