And Hemsky. Nill is a great GM.. was probably the true GM in Detroit in the late 2000's. Wish we still had him.

I was more referring to the center depth. Everything Detroit touches is gold, Stevie Y has done a good job in Tampa.

Stevie Y has done an amazing job in Tampa. In terms of centers, though, agreed. And Detroit drafted Kyle Quincey, and gave a 1st rounder to get him back, and now are paying this third pairing defensemen 4.25 million a year. So, not everything.

Jim Nill took over in Dallas last April, since then he has managed to bring in Tyler Seguin and Jason Spezza. Your move MacT.
- Dangles13

Let's be fair here... MacT has done well.

Traded Horcoff, Hemsky, Gagner, Dubnyk and Smid (the five longest-tenured Oilers) in under a year.

Has spent 75+ million dollars in two years of FA.

Both of those are pretty bold.

To make depth-for-star trades, you need depth.

And frankly, we've got a fair amount of Spezzas and Seguins. I might have preferred MacT to have pursued the guys Dallas traded.

I honestly think we could have beat both trades, plus having Spezza or Seguin up the middle would change the dynamic of this team.

I would've moved eberle for seguin and not think twice.

First off, they both had NTCs, so that's a huge obstacle.

Outside of that, I don't think we could have beaten those deals. We don't (or didn't) have any players particularly like the ones that Boston and Ottawa landed, but for the Seguin deal,

Eriksson is like Eberle
Fraser is like Lander
Morrow is like Klefbom
Rielly Smith is like ???

So to beat Dallas' deal, you'd be looking at Eberle, Lander, Klef and at the very least a 2nd, probably a 1st.

Seguins NTC doesn't kick in for a few years yet, 2017 I think. Losing Eberle would hurt us but none of the others have impacted Edmonton yet. We could have kept Hemsky and had him and Yakupov as our wingers.

If you look at our predicament now I think we could've afforded that trade. However I'd argue they'd see upside in eberle and therefore a bit more value in him. That's my gut feel on that amd have no evidence to support it.

If the deal was eberle + klefbom + lander + 2nd for seguin + peverly I'd do it

As for the Spezza deal, we probably could have beat that but it was 100% about sending NHL-ready player(s) that are cheap as sin, and most important Spezza waiving to go there.
