With the D men rumored to be available, I don't think that acquiring just one top 4 D man puts this team where most fans hope they will be. It's a move that needs to be made and I would hate Garth once again if we go into the season without a legit D man but for someone to say trading for Evander Kane isn't necessary you're wrong. When you have a deal like this on the table you don't just pass it up (as if EK rumors were true).
Trading Bailey, del colle, and a MINOR 3rd piece for Evander Kane is a no brainer. Anybody who compares a Kane deal to a Vanek deal is moronic. Vanek a rental player--Kane under contract. Simple as that. Acquiring Kane with this deal still gives us enough pieces to move to acquire a top D man. Imagine then trading maybe Grabner and Lee for a solid d man??

i think people may be overestimating brennan...if he starts the season on the third pair than garth has done his job in finding his diamond in the rough. how people have him ahead of hickey and even strait to me screams wishful hoping

I think a Hickey or Brennan could/should be paired w/the likes of a Reinhart or Czuczman were the pair brings to different types of players together.
1 small puck-mover
1 big stay-at-home type
That could be a nice 5/6 for team
to me Strait is a tad to slow compared to the kids if he has the same skillset. |

My only query in that potential situation is why would Atlanta-peg want to ditch him? I have to assume there is something else going on there, until I find out otherwise.

I think it's been very well established that he's not a favorite with the Winnipeg media and doesn't seem interested at all in being there any longer. Personally, as much as I think he's a fantastic player, I don't want him for the attitude. I also don't see a forward as a necessary upgrade. We need a top 4 defenseman. Assets moved in a trade should go toward that, not a young winger with potential that has his head on backwards. I'd much rather have Nelson on the top line with JT and KO and improve our defense.
I don't see him as a necessary move and I don't like his attitude. No spoiled kids please, we have enough issues.

Offensively gifted, but has never proven he can skate at a NHL level. This is from
someone I know who works for one of the organizations he played for- not a personnel guy, but he knows the scouts, etc., who work for the team, obviously.

That's not his job. His job is to report what the isles do. Not offer his opinion. - Dedshark
Yes and no. I get why he's not antagonistic at every turn...he needs to build enough trust and credibility to have a working relationship with his sources in the organization. But that reality, and the fact that his job is to relay Isles' news, doesn't necessarily mean he's only allowed report "what" and is not allowed to ask "why" when appropriate.
Also, he does run the Isles Files blog on Newsday, which is where he could add a bit more personality and opinion beyond the news stories. That's sort of the point of a blog.
I think Staple's OK overall though. It's tough for him to be the best beat writer there ever was considering it's probably just a short-term gig for him like it's been for every other Newsday Isles beat writer. |

The AP wire covers that.
So why have a dedicated writer to regurgitate the sanitized information that trickles out of a pretty-much mute organization? Newsday has a "Report Card" on the Isles webpage on John Tavares, so we can vote and scrutinize the best chance player we've had in decades but heaven forbid anyone question Garth Almighty...
Hockey is a rough sport and no place for overly-sensitive vaginas. |

Agreed, but look at Larry Brooks. The guy reports but also rips the Rangers apart. He has been on their beat for a long time but he gives lots of opinions and thoughts. I'm not his biggest fan but the guy has balls and writes what he think should be written.
While I like Staple, the guy is a bit soft sometimes. |

Brett Cyrgalis is the Rangers beat writer for the Post, not Larry Brooks.
Brooks is a columnist for the paper, not a beat writer. I hate to bring up a discussion that happened weeks ago, but Cyrgalis covers the team, Brooks writes his opinion which, because its a NYC paper, is often about the Rangers.
Newsday doesn't have a hockey columnist which is why Staple (and Zipay) just report the news, not write their opinions or interpretations. |

Serious question: does brooks ever write about other things or just the rangers? |

Depends if he can take more shots at the isles. In lighter news, lighthouse hockey has the highlights up for poulins 50 save shootout win against the sharks. I just about choked when the first highlight was showing amac turn the puck over. |

Hes written quite a few things about the islanders. Irregardless, staple is what he is and nobody has to read his stuff. I choose not too and everybody has that choice. If you choose not to decide you still have made a choice. Lets see who gets the reference? |

Brooks has a column called "Slap Shots" which runs in the NY Post most Sundays. He writes about whatever his little heart desires. He writes about the Rangers most because the Post is NYC's newspaper and him and his editors realize most people reading his column are Rangers fans. He has written about the Isles and Devils too because they are local enough. He's written about the labor issues in the league and even rumor type stuff.
All his stuff is archived on the Post's website. |

Bettman was quoted as "there are numerous interested parties"...Barroway, still interested? Or, does Charles truly believe that he's done such an amazing job with the organization...appears to this fan, he isn't letting go...truly sad. I'd bet apples to donuts that Brooklyn hockey fans run this owner and team out of the borough. |
