I can't see a team giving up an asset for a guy they can sign in a few weeks. Especially when it would have to be at least a 2nd for Chicago to make the trade.

I'm on the Islander's blog suggesting a straight up Martin for Grabner trade. Any thoughts on that in here?

Not exactly a log jam in the top 6. 2 legit top 6 forwards and one is 34
- dbell646

Yeah, if he wants instant top six time, then he needs to go to a bad team, but if him (and the people advising him) are looking for opportunity, Pittsburgh is a good spot. Two of the current top 6 will be 35 when the season starts, and Bennett isn't much more proven than he is. And while there is now some winger depth in the system, it's not like there are any homeruns there outside of potentially Kapanen.

If they know Martin is going to free agency, I'd take a look at that. Grabner is only signed for one more season, so I'd want some future added, like a mid-teir prospect or like a 2nd-3rd round pick though.

I think a Grabner trade would only make sense if we were trading Sutter as I will always view Grabner as a good third liner and average 2nd liner. Basically a bigger Brian Gibbons. I just don't see him as a much of a sniper. Maybe Grabs would play really well with Sid or Geno...I dont really know.

Plus, I don't see Martin saying yes to the NYI.

Difference is Grabner has proven he can score in the NHL. I've always thought Grabner would be a perfect winger for Sid.

I basically meant in relation to Martin. We'd only gain a player under contract for one more year, that is why I'd like a future element, instead of just pushing the "guy going to free agency" back one more summer.

Stempniak probably wanted to go to the Rangers. Gibbons is so good he didn't get offered a single 1 way contract by any team in the league, if he did he would have taken it. Spaling is a bottom six player for the penguins. Our blogger will constantly scrutinize his possession stats, and if they are not north of 50% he is a failure and most of you will agree with him.

Well, you know I would do it. Haha, I'm irrationally desperate to get a good, young-ish top 6 winger. Would have to imagine Grabs would fit well in Johnston's uptempo system.

Again Martin won't go to NYI though. Does he have to submit a list of 15 teams?

If you want to ignore context that is fine. It is about how a player is used as well as what his possession is. I never use possession as a standalone stat and to represent me otherwise is not accurate.

This site is something people should be aware of.

Why is Spaling the only red circle in an area with players that are similarly used?

It depends on the number.. if it's 15, it might be close if he'd like to stay in the east for the rest of the season. Remember, if the Pens move him it's because he's likely going to UFA, so it's not like he has to be married to his trade destination. He likely won't start the season on the top PP with the Pens, he could go to the Islanders, quarterback the PP, and get some easy points there to go into free agency with.

But if the number is 8 or 10 teams, yeah, NYI has got to be out off of that list.

I like your logic. But yea, if its 8 teams, not a chance. Martin is extremely competitive and wants the best shot at the cup. I think moreso than the big payday, he wants to win. I think he would go to LA, CHI, BOS, DET, MIN, ANA, DAL, STL....just guessing...but NYI wouldn't be anywhere in the right ballpark for him.

Willing to bet the Jets are one of those teams. Dumb to have a team there.

I'm game to bring in Grabner or Nino. Both would be great! Dropping Dupes to the 3rd line makes this team pretty solid.

On Sutter, he can stay or leave for all I care. He did fine in the playoffs, but he can be replaced. To be honest, Im not sure why you would bring him back if Spaling can bring in similar results for a cheaper price.

I'm trying to talk myself into it, lol.... If I had to pick 15 teams to go to, the Islanders wouldn't be there. Maybe after they move to Brooklyn, but this year can't be that great in that building as far as fan support.

Well you just wrote an article saying your concerns with spaling have everything to do with his possession stats. When I click that link I don't even see Spalings name, and don't take it personal, I still come home from work everyday and read your blog.

MIN board wouldn't budge on Coyle or Nino for Martin and Sutter. That's very official haha. But sort of illustrates how expensive a young top 6 guy could be.

I will always be on the Rutherford explanation of advanced stats. Evaluating a player is a combination of the eye test and stats. Its just a tool. It illustrates a players history. Its helpful in predicting future trends. No need for these crazy arguments.

The Spaling blog raises a point about his bad advanced stats but we can all draw our own conclusions.

It's not the stats it's the holier than thou attitude the nerds bring along with it.
