if a team likes Cody Franson, they like him. then they look at his salary and see if he's worth it. they don't just look at a guy and say "he has value because he's less overpaid than another player". there is a separation of player and salary when evaluating a player. there has to be. - DoubleDown
Ya and when the market is giving Kulikov and Nikitin the $ they get..Franson is good value for 1 year..after that who knows hes gotten raises of like 66 percent and 64 percent over the last 2 years |

Went to have a look at which forwards he most frequently played with and surprised to find it was Kadri, Kessel, JVR, McArthur, and Bozak in that order.
Maybe the high SH% and +/- was about successfully "ambushing" oppositions 4th/3rd lines by throwing out top offensive guys with Franson/Fraser.
Yaaaay Carlyle? - awfside
I dont think it has anything to do with that....or at least very little
there is no doubt that season Kadri was given easier match ups though |

Franson is a good deal.
He has a good cap hit if he stays or a cap hit for those teams looking to add him.
I said he would get 3.75 in arb...glad to see him sign for less. |

We have too many forwards also. Strait and Carkner should be buried in the minors, although we don't really have any room there. I'm OK with just literally burying them also. Donovan signed a one year two way deal, so that (plus the signing of Brennan on a one-way) likely means he's bound to start the year in the Bridge.
I, realistically, see this team as having a legitimate shot at the playoffs if we add one more competent defender. A guy like Oduya would be great. I'm not shooting for the moon here, but another guy that can play in his own end and make a solid first pass would be huge for us. - eichiefs9
Does he not have to clear waviers to do so, on a one way deal.. |

It's a great deal for Franson.
UFA at the end of the year - and someone will go stoopid over him. |

One-way or two-2 way deals have nothing to do with waivers.
It's a formula - year drafted, number of professional games played, age.
I'll dig up a link for you. |

I wonder what ROR is going to end up with. I like him as a player, but do not want him on the team because of his attitude towards money.. |

Yep, it's more like "we need a player that can do X; we have Y cap space and will need Z next year to resign some RFAs/UFAs".
I don't think they care if a player is worth it or not, only if they can fit him in and whether or not there's another player that can do something similar for less.

Just a theory that throws Carlyle a bone. He must've done something right since he's been here.

Exempt Due to Experience
This is the meat and potatoes of determining waiver eligibility. Three key factors determine whether a player is waiver eligible; age, years of experience, and # of games played..
Age is defined as the age of the player when he signs his entry-level contract with an NHL club. This is used to determine the thresholds for the players' waiver eligibility. The thresholds are the number of years from signing a professional contract, and the number of professional games played.
Depending on the age as determined above, a player is waiver eligible for a certain number of years from the year in which he signed his first contract, as shown below.
Goalies Skaters
Age Years Age Years
18 6* 18 5*
19 5* 19 4*
20 4 20 3
21 4 21 3
22 4 22 3
23 3 23 3
24 2 24 2

This, in a nutshell, is the problem with Leafs fans.
Fraser was a fantastic 6th-7th defenceman.
He was a mean S.O.B.
He wasn't afraid to drop the gloves. He wasn't afraid to block shots. He wasn't afraid to sweep the front porch.
He quietly and happily ate popcorn in the pressbox when he didn't dress.
He could reliably play 12 minutes a night against the other team's 3rd and 4th lines.
And he did all that for about a million bucks a year.
But he wasn't good enough to make the all-star team, so he must have sucked.
Remember how we ran Hal Gill out of town?
It's the stupidity that unites us all.
P.S. Of course, after he had his head squished, he wasn't the same player. So I'm not calling for the return of Fraser. - Atomic Wedgie
Well we really don't need to start listing all the ways our fan base is out to lunch...

The guy just gets completely exposed by any player with half-decent speed. That's a problem for a defenseman, a big problem. Having a long reach is great but isn't something to be relied upon completely which he does. His positioning isnt AS bad as it was when he got here but it's still not up to par either.
Franson needs to be bottom pairing where the speed suits him better and he can use his one tool, an accurate shot, to beat some third liners. - markmark
Agreed 100% - good assessment. |
