ok so you trade him right? are you getting a #1 defenceman in return? no? ok. you've just opened a hole in your lineup bigger than any other hole that already existed. - DoubleDown
well the hope is you trade him for enough pieces that in 3-5 years you are much better than years 3-5 with subban eating away all that cap space, they will barely be able to retain their pending RFAs if subban makes 10+M

so you trade PK to make sure you have enough room for a 7th dman and a 4th liner? - DoubleDown
that 9M will be a struggle to keep the other 4 RFAs in my post |

If the Hawks can pay Toews-Kane-Seabrook-Keith-Crawford, the Habs can pay their own core. |

then i really don't see the point of running an NHL team to be honest, if whenever you have elite talent you want to trade them so you don't have to pay them. Montreal has their 2 franchise players entering their prime producing years in Price and Subban. you have to build around that. you can't have your eye on 3-5 years down the road all the time. |

If the cap goes up by 5M next year the hawks will have 8M to flush out 8 spots |

by this logic, Chicago should have traded Patrick Kane in order to keep Dustin Byfuglien and Andrew Ladd. you draft and develop star players, you keep them. no NHL teams trades PK Subbans. no NHL team lets a PK Subban hit UFA. |

So trade subban in order to sign depth players with little to no serious talent?
Is that what we're getting at today?

Beaulieu can replace Subban's offense. There's a reason one was a first round pick and the other a second! |

look i understand what you're saying. but where does it end? what if you you acquire a player in a Subban trade who becomes a star. an absolute stud who makes the next Team Canada and even wins an individual award. his contract will come due at some point. then what? you trade him? |

this is the point. you have salary problems, you shave from the bottom, not the top. it's a lot easier to find 2-3 bottom roster players than it is to find PK Subban. |

Hopefully they can move out moen and his 1.8 which in theory would be replaced with dale |

also, chicago had to tear their first cup team apart... didn't really matter too much because they kept their best dudes |
