you know who's a genius? Nonis. he specifically overpaid Franson so that other GMs would think he's better than he is, raising his trade value. it's just brilliant. |

Compare him to Doughty if you must, but that means an AAV of $7mil.
Take arguably the top 3 defensemen in the league: Weber, Doughty, Keith and you'll find an average cap hit of $6.8mil. Tack on a very generous bonus of 10% and that brings you up to $7.5mil, or the third highest paid d-man in the league.
It shouldn't be much more complex than that. |

It is more complex. For one, higher cap. The bigger complexity is that Doughty wasn't the player he is now when he signed to that 7mil cap hit. If you recall he had actually been a bit inconsistent the season before and the huge debate was whether he should be getting his big pay day yet. Some people thought that 7mil was too much. It ended up being a great deal for LA in the long run, but you can't compare the contract Subban is signing this summer to the one Doughty signed years ago. Subban is worth more right now than Doughty was 3 years ago. Likewise, if Doughty were signing today, he'd be getting wayyyy more than 7 per. |

comparables don't work, not when Dion Phaneuf makes more than those 3, not when Brooks Orpik makes frighteningly close to those 3... |
