he could fight yes?? Never said he was the best at it.
- GOA88

So can Sidney Crosby. I don't think he's ever lost a fight (the Giroux one was a nothing fight).

IMO, people cant hold Lindros not winning a cup against him. Its a team sport and he did everything he could to win. If he had a cup..... Wouldnt everyone think differently of his career as a whole? Probably. But that isnt fair. He never had the supporting cast of a guy like Gretzky, Forsberg or Lemieux. Thats a fact
- GOA88

i dont hold lindros not winning a cup against him. it helps the legacy, but man it sure is tough to blame that on one player

what goes against lindros, unfairly or not, is just simply that he didnt do it for long enough.

i was definitely a little on the young side to try and look back and implement how i evaluate things now to what i saw back then, but yeah he was scary.

in today's game, i think both malkin and OV could come the closest, but the mental makeup just isnt there.

i honestly think the closest bet to total game domination with that physical imposition could be anze kopitar.

I'd say Getzlaf, personally.

Pretty sure Lindros beat some tough customers, including Chara.
- GOA88

This came at a time when Lindros was a Ranger Joe Thornton went on fighting rampage. I can't remember how many fights in a row but Thornton was winning them. Then Thornton decided to go up against Lindros, who at the same I believe was only a shadow of his form self. It wasn't even close. Streak of fighting for Joe Thornton ended there.

None of these said players can be used in the same breath. But if you are talking about skills and size. They may be the closest we have to a Lindros in this era. Which is pretty sad.

One old time Flyer who could really fight was, believe it or not, Rick Macleish

Bedrock didn't fight much, but I never saw him lose and man once he did snap, he could throw em!

According to my dad, all of the guys in the 70s, even superstar Clarke, fought fairly often.

He constantly put himself ahead of his teams and his teammates... hard to forgive that one, too.

Yes, but when he was on his game, he basically was better than the rest of the team. He could be a total one-man wrecking crew.

Are you actually saying Crosby can fight? Hell I'd pound that guy into the ice myself.

Yes and no, there were a ton of brawls, but most guys just paired up and wrestled a bit. The only guys that really fought a lot were Schultz, Dupont, Kelly and Saleski and in the later 70s, Bridgman, MacIlhargey and Holmgren.

I seriously doubt anyone on here could take on any professional athlete in the prime physical time of his career (aside from maybe soccer players).

And my point was that most NHL players have/can fight, but that doesn't make them above average or good at it just because they win.

i was just using todays players.

if you put a better brain/heart/whatever intangible word you use in Malkin and OV, i think you see something maybe a little different, but not necessarily that far off.

if OV wanted to, he could come close to the physicality. he is a bull. puck skills arent otherworldly, but if he so chose he could be a dominant power forward with one of the best shots of all time, who can absolutely wreck people.

instead, yeah. we see what he does.

talent wise, i dont care if i sound like i have pens biased, malkin is the most physically gifted player the league has seen in a while. i dont think he has the pure physical strength of lindros of OV, but he is a pretty big man. he wouldnt be a total slouch. but his real strength would be in his length. he could be a selke player and art ross contender every year.

I dont doubt it. IDK about you or anyone else but I'm a big boy in shape (6'1" 210 lbs and yes I play hockey) and I would do just fine against Crosby. The kid is a sissy.

Position is different, but Chara would be my pick for most physically dominant player since 88. Ridiculously fit... dude can do like 30+ pull-ups and he weighs like 260 lbs. Definition of a beast.

yeah. im far from a lindros apologist.

ive dealt with enough oh he was better than mario/jagr arguments over my life.

but, i try to be fair and realistic. from a purely looking back at him as a player thing, considering his legacy, ect, i dont immediately go Oh he doesnt have a cup. discard him. i think that would be hasty.

but the injuries are an unfortunate reality when evaluating him.

well, maybe if the athlete in question is a jockey. I'm pretty sure I can take a guy who is only 5'1 and weighs 102 lbs

When choosing an opponent on the ice, it's best to be smart. Would it be smart for Lindros to face a fourth line winger enforcer just for the sake of doing so? No, it just plays into the other team's hands.

Along with this, Jerome Iglina was asked all the time as a young Captain and young talent to try to tone it down with the fighting. Skilled players can hurt themselves and become less effective.

A Guy like Eric Lindros has nothing to gain by fighting the other team's tough guys.

I still say it would be Getzlaf. He's big and strong, likes to play physically, and if he played in the East instead of constantly going up against those WC defense powerhouses, would probably have won 1-2 Art Ross Trophies.

honestly, i wasnt even considering defensemen for some reason. i was just thinking that a big forward who can literally have the puck on his stick for like a minute and change shift.

but chara deserves a lot of consideration. for all of his size, he isnt exactly a fire hydrant either.

Was it the same summer where we made he choice to target Timonen as our next number one defensemn when Chara was out there?
