Your probably right...SG had the defensive reliability of an 18 year old rookie any way so LD might not be much of a downgrade at all. - Jeropotato
I'm not quick to blame Gagner entirely on that. A new coach (and system) every year except one, and by the time he was traded he was the last player from his rookie year. Think about the turnover and what was expected of him. Three years in, more high profile kids needed sheltering and we started treating him like a fogie as opposed to a prospect.
Wouldn't surprise me to see Gagner have a real turnaround a la Turris. 55 points, good defensive play whether at centre or on the wing. Sometime in the next couple of years that is. |

All I'll say about Arcobello is that after deifying him last year and slagging Gagner in comparison: If Arco only happens to score 30 points this year, anyone who turns on him deserves this team and the mess they're in. |

I think 30-35'd probably be a fair prediction. I'd bet it'd be closer to 40-45ish if he was playing with Hall-Eberle or an improved Yakcity. If he's EDM's 30P 3C in 1-2 years, I'm happy. Good utility F, playmaker on PP, good on the PK, wins face-offs, hits, n actually knows his way around his own end. |

Agreed, the it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog cliche applies here for sure. |

I think he'll get an opportunity on the PP, frankly. Picking arco over Draisaitl (if he's here) is exactly the kind of lesson that Eakins likes to teach rookies to keep them working hard.
And - admittedly knowing little about Leon's faceoff prowess - I think Arco may be the best faceoff-winning option on the 2nd unit. Which should boost his numbers a bit.
Still, he hasn't shown to be an incredibly gifted NHL playmaker to date, and the fickleness of NHL fans manifests itself as this: Every April they seem to marvel at the grit and hard work of teams like Boston, LA and even Chicago, but by December they poop on the player who embodies those qualities if they don't make the grade offensively.
Less a dman or two, this is as close to the roster that Oilers fans have been wailing for as it's been in years, and I'm going to be in one foul mood if fans aren't willing to lie in the bed they've made. |

My favorite part about the oilers is not knowing which of our boy wonders is going to be the best. For all we know Hall ends up being worse than LD, Yak, and RNH. (frank) that would be sweet |

To a large extent, it is the size of the dog in the fight.
Laziness or no, Penner is going to win more puck battles in the corner than Arco or Sam.
And I find people have a really short memory about Sam, and try really hard to stick him with the lazy label. Stunted? probably. Lazy? Absolutely not.
Turns out that not every player the Oilers have ever traded was lazy and selfish |

So here's the other thing I was thinking about rather than cleaning my shed today...
Is it just me, or are Oilers fans in general kind of "meh" about Draisaitl? They love for him is obviously not as strong as it was for Nuge, and I'm wondering why?
Is it because:
1. Nuge was a way better prospect?
2. Draisaitl might not have the BPA when we drafted him, don't want get too excited about him?
3.We are tired of expecting an 18 yo to make an impact?
4.Expectations of the team are higher and we don't have enough to insulate him in a year where we expect to compete?
Personally, I'm thinking #4...with a little bit of #3. - Jeropotato
Forgot to answer this when it came up.
It's funny, when I think about it, there's no good reason to assume Draisaitl will be worse. But I did, pretty much until you asked that question. I mean, Toews is better than Jordan Staal.
I guess the reason, which in turn makes me worried, is that the fans are bored with the rebuild, and he is an emblem of futility. Indeed, I think that was a huge factor in people turning on Gagner (and some turning on Yak). So #3 is pretty appropriate there.
That being said, many of the top teams have lines that can come alive at a given moment, and since Nuge's primary skill is his smarts, I wouldn't be surprised if the more 'tangibly' gifted player was favoured by more people down the road. He could well become the 1C, but if that's the case, Nuge will be among the most celebrated 2Cs in the game, so that's no matter to me. |
