Maybe on paper but not if you actually watched the games. They played off each other equally well and were just a great pairing with the chemistry they established. You can look at all the advanced stats you want but at the end of the day, they don't actually show how well a player was really playing.

The Rangers weren't willing to pay Stralman more than $4M yet they will likely extend Staal for $5.5M+...I wonder why?

What I know is that more shots were fired at the Rangers net when Staal was playing with someone other than Stralman. More shots were fired at the Rangers net when Stralman and Staal were playing together than when Stralman was with someone else. They formed a solid pairing, but the numbers clearly show that Stralman was driving the bus there.

Staal and Stralman were darn good together. Staal was pretty bad when taken away from Stralman. That pretty much sums it up.

The Rangers are paying Glass an AAV of $1.45MM per year for the next three years. That argument doesn't hold water.

What if I told you that 95% of the shots fired on net were low quality and from terrible angles because Staal and Stralman drove the forwards to the boards? So those possession stats are skewed and inaccurate?

Staal has 1 year left on his $3.95M AAV deal.

I just said - the pairing was great. They played well together. The difference is that Stralman played well away from Staal. Staal didn't play well away from Stralman. When together, which was often, they were great.

Loved that signing. We traded Dorsett for a 3rd round pick (which is worth a lot more than what he is) when he's 1 year away from UFA. He will get paid 2M+ next year and not only did we replace him with Glass for 3 years for at least 25% cheaper, but he's already cheaper than what Dorsett's current deal is.

Glass for 3 years for 25%+ cheaper than Dorsett AND a 3rd round pick instead of Dorsett at 2M+? Hell yes.

From looking at those stats, it seems that McDonagh's Corsi also goes down when he doesn't play with Stralman. Is McDonagh a product of Stralman too?

Also, doesn't it say that Stralman's Corsi when he plays with Staal is 54.6% but when he's apart from Staal it's 54.2%? That's looks like a slight decrease to me.

Yes? Like I said, the pairing was great.

This past year, if you look at the one-year sample, Stralman was actually better away from Staal than he was when they were together.

Isn't the whole premise of these stats to look at the largest sample size possible? So the 2011-14 one is more accurate than just the 1 year snapshot from last year.

Didn't you guys offer him $6mill per year?
Although I agree that the term/money was a bit much (I think all Tampa fans do) it's a bit harsh too compare him with Clarkson

The possession stats don't lie. Clarkson > Callahan. They're not even in the same class.

Of course. So what you're seeing in the large sample is that Stralman improved Staal's Corsi % by 7.8%. Staal improved Stralman's Corsi % by 0.4%. Again, who was driving the bus there? Take them away from each other and Stralman stays roughly the same. Staal goes to a very, very bad place.

I'm not going to continue this debate. We're going in circles. You like your player. That's fine. I'm happy with the Stralman signing.

Staal was also coming off 2 very serious injuries in that time frame and played like poop. There are too many factors at play for Corsi to be the definitive decider.

But yes, I like our player and you like yours. Let's end it at that.
