So you're saying that if Ottawa had built their Arena in Ottawa, more people would attend the game? - l3ig_l2ecl
Or, if they built it in Alaska, less people would attend. |

was Gary Carter traded because his salary demands were getting too high?
did Expos attendance ever again rise to NL average after 1983?
how can you totally dismiss that claim? - Gary_B.

the original owners didn't care, they owned the land around the rink and wanted to make their money developing the whole area in Kanata. Worked well for them, they made a lot of money. |

forget that. if Ottawa had just build a stronger traffic infrastructure or a direct light rail around that building they wouldn't have attendance issues. |

I agree with this.
You have close to a million people int he city, but most wont get to the game because they don't want to drive an hour in Rush hour just to make it there. If they had a rail/subway system to get there, problem would be solved. Or have it downtown. |

They had plans to have it at plaines Le Breton's (or something like that). That would've been way better. |

That's not why Gary Carter was traded. He was going to be 31, and had caught a lot of games. The return was thought to be very encouraging at the time. Brooks has several good years, Youmans had a few and would have had more save for cocaine and cookies. Winningham was a great fielder and could fly. His problem was he couldn't find a way on base. Fitzgerald ended up a dud, but was a high prospect when they got him. Yes, their attendance did rise to NL average after 1983. |

that option was considered but the cost of land was too high (they said) and in reality it didn't serve the purpose for which the investors put money in, which was to develop land in Kanata that was zoned farming land before the team was purchased then the city changed the zoning to commercial/residential. |

Yup.
That piece of land was contaminated.
Still would've been nice to have it there. |

Just my opinion really. Not wanting to cave into salary demands, doesn't indicate the inability to keep players. They did so following his departure with Raines and others. |

Feds built the war museum on Lebreton flats and a good chunk of the land was sold to a condo builder. |

you're dismissal of any type of financial reasoning with regards to the trade is contrary to several things i have read so agree to disagree. as for attendance, again, what i have seen, every year between 83 and relocation to WAS fell below average. well below average for the most part. |
