to find a single local owner? yeah pretty much. you'd need private wealth and major corporate investment as well. and the memories of the 80s and 90s are still pretty fresh in everyone's minds.

Why do they need to buy him out? He's on a 2-way entry level contract??
- l3ig_l2ecl

You have a limit of 50 NHL contracts per team. They're gonna use the cheap buyout, I think it's 150$ or something along those lines. The Isles have a lot of prospects coming so they need the contracts for players that are still in the plans.

What memories? They had higher attendance than the Yankees in the 80's.

No. I wouldn't say impossible. Miraculous perhaps, but not impossible.
- hscesq

when you consider that the Habs (and BC) were a $600 million investment 5 or 6 years ago and it's not like you had a mile-long list of suitors for them, i think that shows that finding local money for baseball team is just not possible.

i'm not just referring to attendance. the '80s is when it became evident that Montreal would have a hard time retaining its star players.

Gotta take into account that the Centre Bell is downtown, I'm no Montréal real-estate expert but it has to be cheaper for land where they want to build the new one. Griffin Bassin or something like that.

right but between the stadium, team purchase/relocation fee/expansion fee/cost of getting the team up and running locally...that number has been placed at $1 billion by most economic experts.

Of course, the further away you build it the harder it to get people to attend games.

i think they'd have it a stone's throw from downtown. lots of teams have done that... built the stadium in the shadow of downtown rather than right in the heart (Twins for example)

So you're saying that if Ottawa had built their Arena in Ottawa, more people would attend the game?

was Gary Carter traded because his salary demands were getting too high?
did Expos attendance ever again rise to NL average after 1983?
how can you totally dismiss that claim?
