that makes no sense. if Subban was asking for 5 years (as was widely reported), then that contract would be up in 2017, and he would be looking at UFA status, in which case, assuming you sign him, you're signing him for a much bigger cap hit than what he will/might get on an 8-year deal this summer. so you'd be in better shape over the next 3 years, and worse shape over the following 5. and obviously the cycle would repeat itself after that.

but if PK had signed for 5 years, then he'd be looking at an 8-year deal at age 28. so you'd end up paying ridiculous money on the backend of that deal for a player that might be declining in his mid-30s. if he signs an 8 year deal this summer, you're paying through the nose but at least you're paying through the nose for his best years, without question.

the idea that they (frank)ed up by signing that bridge will make sense if they lose the player, no doubt. but if PK gets locked up for 8 this summer, then ultimately, it will work out in Montreal's best interest in the long term.
