Sure he does. 3rd pair plays 8 minutes a game/
- njdevils350

No third pair plays 8 minutes but what other options does he have for the PK? Zid or Gelinas? And would it really surprise you if Larsson started on the 3rd pair?

Of course it didn't. That's just what they were trying to accomplish.
- njdevils350

So if they never accomplished what they were trying to by scratching/benching gelinas, then how did it make sense?

"Jacob Josefson has agreed to a new contract with Devils. Lamoriello also said things remain "status quo" with unrestricted free agent left wing Ryan Carter."

He's trolling at this point.

My apologies, sometimes when a 6th man gets rotated out he'll be around 8 minutes, generally 13-14. Both are options. DeBoer doesn't have to do anything.

They'll have 5 other defenseman for the PK. Again, DeBoer doesn't /b]have to do anything.

Yes, I would be very surprised if Larsson were not in the top 4 or on the PK to start the season. But, by no means is the coach painted into a corner, as you have suggested.

Sorry for all the bold, I clicked the wrong button at one point and im not gonna fix it.

I maintain we're going to really miss fayne, especially on the pk. Greene is going to be overworked with 28-32 mins a night. I like the kids, but when you only have 3 vets and only one of them can play solid D, it's a bit concerning.

Not to stir the pot, but I thought it made a lot of sense to scratch Gelinas a few times down the stretch. The team was in the middle of a dire playoff push and just got the point where they could no longer sacrifice defense for offense. I think they'll both play significant minutes this year.

- njdevils350

Then why was Zidlicky on the ice? They guy who consistently gave the other team a PP in the closing moments of numerous games and was essentially a lock for one PP for the opposition every single game?

So maybe it made sense to try it, but it clearly wasn't working.

As bad as salvador is he's the only one on the team that can really clear the crease. All the other vets are undersized and the kids still haven't shown the consistency.

I don't feel like getting into ambiguous rhetoric that would inevitably compare each of the defenseman. I think the answer is rather obvious. Funny thing was, no one around here had a problem with Gelinas defense at the time. Mum was the word.

Now, it's ok to point it out. Very selective.

However, I digress. I was just pointing out that DeBoer obviously has some confidence in the young players.

Well it had to happen eventually. With Severson and Santini coming up behind these 3, the transition needed to happen so you don't have 5 dmen all with less than 200 games played. And who knows what's up with Jacobs.

As for clearing the crease, I don't know how useful a skill that is in today's NHL. It's not like the 90's where crosschecking someone out of the crease was just solid defending; in today's game that's a penalty.

When you got guys like Clarkson & Holmstrom who make a career out of parking in front of the net & tipping in shots from the point, it's still important.

Plus you have tools like Avery & his antics in the crease & countless other times a guy has gotten in the crease and caused disruption.

In my opinion it's still nice to have that Dman who will take care of business.

Unfortunately, I fail to see Salvador as that guy. The guy is as soft as a pillow.

But, I agree on having some vets.
I just hope DeBoer rewards ice time based on play this season instead on contract or seniority.

so do we really have Greene-Salvador as our top pair? I think Greene and Merrill are our best dmen (that can play defense) at the moment, maybe Larsson. .. which is a bit scary. But Merrill worked well with Zidlicky (and played the left side, would have to either move to Greene's right or move Greene to right), Larsson has worked well with Gelinas.. and long ago Sal worked well with Greene. It just sucks cuz Fayne was so much better than Sal, would cost about the same, and would be worth having for a few years. The kids better grow up fast or we're going to be pretty shaky next year.

I know Fisher is out for a while, but Nashville has O. Jokinen, Fisher, Ribiero, Roy, Cullen, Smith, Gaustad, Wilson down the middle.
On Preds blog, they have this as their lines.

Smith-Ribeiro-Neal
Wilson-Jokinen-Jarnkrok
Cullen-Roy-Stalberg
Forsberg-Gaustad-Nystrom

Roy will probably be injured when Fisher is ready to come back anyway..
