Absolutely. And for me it comes down to how heavily involved the instruments are in the music. Back in the day the songs were about 3 minutes of mostly vocals. I can't deal with that much any more, especially if what they are singing about is stupid as poop to me, and it usually is. Cause I'm getting older. And grumpy.

I need some texture, an instrumental landscape free of the chatter so I can just let my mind wander.

Anybody go back (or maybe never left) vinyl?

So you like Yes and Rush, eh?

I keep my listening varied enough that I really don't get sick of things. My wife jokes that my iPod is a sampler. It's got everything from Beethoven to Megadeth, from Public Enemy to Garth Brooks, from John Coltrane to Extreme.

Agreed. One of my favorites in recent years.

Saw 'Gravity' tonight...visually impressive, otherwise fairly average, imo.

Haven't seen it, but I've heard it described the exact same way.

it depends. groups like kansas, boston, bad company...it's generic shlock rock that i would be with never hearing every again.

bands like zeppelin, floyd, rush, yes...that's a completely different level of talent, and i almost never get tired of it even though i've all of their songs a billion times.

- hammarby31

You're right. Yes is one band it would take a while for me to get tired of. Then Floyd, but they are a distant 2nd cause the Barrett stuff was so much different from Waters.

You guys might dig this remake, I thought it was pretty good.

Yes to Yes. My buddy absolutely loved Rush, but I never really sunk into their music. Same with The Who. I probably need to give them more of a chance, but they just never really clicked with me on a deeper level.

Keeping it varied is the way to go.

Nightmares on Wax could be worth checking out - I'd start with the 'In a Space Outta Sound' album.

This is why I love Pink Floyd.

As far as vinyl goes, I have 2 realistic fun goals (skipping the get a job, family, etc etc): Acquire a baby grand piano, and acquire a sweet record collection complete with a record player.

I will keep an eye out for it...i.e. download it off pirate bay in about twnety minutes

Actually, I plan on listening to a bunch of Old Time Radio stuff I found a couple weeks ago. Shows and WW2 news and speeches.

Acquiring a nice vinyl collection is a good goal.

A job and a family aren't too bad either.

Meh. They're ok.

I mean ya know...bucket list type things.

I set aside anywhere from $20-100 every month (lately, it's dwindled to once or twice every 3 months because rent) as savings toward a baby grand

Well, sort of. It's an apartment in West Philly.

As you all know by now most likely, I go to school in Philly but home is Lancaster. First 2 years I lived in dorms. Last year I got an apartment with a couple friends, and don't plan on moving out any time soon....unless my better half lands some sort of apartment- then I'll have a decision to make. She commutes an hour each way every day...bless her

So right now I'm back in lancaster working, then in a month, it's off to my second home again

Long commutes are a killer, man. I was driving 70 miles round trip every day for about a year and toward the end I was an angry, snapping fool ready to jump out of my car and throw punches at all the other jerkoffs with me on the road. It's just not healthy, not what we're meant to do. It's one thing if you're actually driving, that's not so bad, but once the stop and go on major highways happen - and they happen every day around Philly - it's bad news.

She's in Lancaster County?

John Bonham could shred a kit too. And Ginger.

Working hard is good, especially if you enjoy what you're doing and are hopefully learning, but that on top of a long commute is rough. An hour to Jersey from your place or Philly?
