I actually like Hemsky. Always have.

Solid skill player crippled by injuries.

He's another one of those guys who gets his points, but he's never able to elevate his game when he needs to.

Also, Jokinen's career -138 is phenomenal.
- jmatchett383

Jokinen on a year 2.5 million deal is incredibly low risk. To me anyway.

I don't think its too wild to conclude which organization is laughing at which when it comes to LeCavalier vs Jokinen.

1200 games worth of hockey and the guy has only made the PO's once... I think that says something about the teams he's found himself on.

If I was his dad there would be a long car ride home from the rink.

Let's be honest: All four players -- Lecavalier, Roy, Jokinen and Ribeiro -- aren't worth all of the time we spend on them.

I pity David Poile. Those are the signings you make when you are a desperate GM, when you can see the axe swinging if/when you don't make the playoffs.

Let me put it this way: If I was a GM and I've missed the playoffs two seasons in a row, I don't think I'd be counting on Derek Roy, Olli Jokinen and Mike Ribeiro to save my ass.

Maybe if it was 2007. But not 2014.

The best thing about Vinny is at least he's just one guy. You can move him down or scratch him if he doesn't play well. It's costly, but at least he's just one guy. While the other three guys are cheap, they're still on your NHL roster.

Hell I'd rather have traded Hartnell for Jokinen's UFA rights.

At least you aren't taking a bad contract back in that deal.

Olli Jokinen is possibly the worst "star" player in the NHL, maybe next to Ales Hemsky.
- jmatchett383

I agree.

Olli was picked 3rd overall. His greatest personal successes have come in a terrible hockey market and I don't think it's a coincidence he's only played in 6 playoff games in an 1100+ game career.

I'm not comparing term/contract. Only a simple on-ice basis, I'll take VL.

Intangibles? Are you referring to Olli Jokinen crumbling under pressure, Ribiero being a locker room cancer, or Roy's inability to outmuscle my grandmother?

Edit: Can we please wait and see how Vinny looks, at least in camp, before labeling him as "injury prone?"

- jmatchett383

NO!!! You know the mantra...our players who have a bad transition year are permanently damaged goods yet Ribero's terrible year is an abberation and he will rebound for sure.

This will be enjoyable when Vinny puts up 60+ points and revisionist history sets in.

I really hope it will be enjoyable in a few years time when Umberger, LeCavalier and Streit are under contract having a combined cap hit of roughly 14 million.

He's been a really good player for Finland at WC's and Olympics when he gets to play alongside good players against great competition, though.

I think if you swap Vinny and Olli's career paths and left everything else equal, I'm not sure Olli wouldn't have had just as good of a career as Vinny has had.

Considering he's missed 51 games the last 4 seasons, no.

He's a good bet to miss at least 10 games this year at a minimum.

I don't expect 2 of them to be on the roster by then. I don't know which 2, though.

Are they chronic injuries, where it's been the same nagging injury over and over? Or are they thing like broken bones and pulls?

Basically, the way Vinny moved around on the ice last year, a rebound year is all the Flyers can put stock in at this point.

You essentially need to hope a player, approaching his mid-30's, can shake off injuries and age and somehow, maintain the semblance of the highly functional hockey player they are paying him to be.

Except in Game 82 of 09/10. Did he even try a move? He just kinda drifted to the right and tried a weak backhand.

Olli Jokinen will score 1G/2A in game his team loses 6-4. He will score 0G/0A and be a -1 in a game his team wins 3-2.

The Flyers better damn well hope that's the case.

LeCavalier has a chance to play his way off a team that doesn't want him. I don't think anyone touches any of those contracts unless the Flyers take another bad deal back.

Will be really interesting when the younger kids (bSchenn/Coots), Voracek and Coburn need new contracts in a couple of seasons.

That has to be considered as well.

Hopefully VL has a bounceback year, but there's little doubt we're stuck with him when it's clear the team would rather move on.
