Ok so the guy who scored in the World Cup yesterday...his was like Mario Goetz or something.

The announcer called him Super Mario. I was livid.

Trading Callahan for St. Louis cut their likeability by 80%.

I don't know if Eddie Mio qualifies as "stronger in net."

My point was, Gretzky didn't get a free skate into the NHL. The Oilers were no better of a team than Pittsburgh when Mario rolled in and they weren't for a number of years.

I'll take Mio over Denis Herron and Roberto Romano

But I get your point.

The Flyers almost had teal jerseys during the style freakout of the 90s. In 1995 these almost became part of Flyers history:

The first two years in the NHL the Oilers were hardly a good team. They barely made the playoffs and almost all the players who would eventually make up their cup teams were drafted in those first four struggling seasons. Yes, they made the playoffs but 16 of 21 teams made it.

C'mon, Who did he even have to play with those first few seasons. Messier was on the roster but he was a rookie and not an impact player that he would become. The Oilers entered the NHL with just 4 protected players from their WHA squad. That's more than your average rebuild, that's a virtual expansion team.

- mayorofangrytown

By Gretzky's second NHL season, he had Kurri, Messier, Anderson and Coffey on the roster with him. Kurri was a PPG player as a rookie and Messier had 63 points in 72 games. Not an impact player, but very respectable numbers for a rookie.

By Gretzky's third NHL season, Anderson, Messier, Kurri and Coffey were all averaging more than a PPG at the NHL level with the lowest points total being Kurri's 86 in 71 games. There were 10 players on that team that would win at least one Cup with Gretzky & the Oilers.

In Lemieux's third NHL season, the Penguins top scorers were him, Dan Quinn (71 points in 64 games) Randy Cunneyworth (53 points), Craig Simpson and Terry Ruskowski (51 points each). During that season, 4 guys who would eventually be on Pittsburgh's Cup teams played for the Penguins.

I dunno, I may be crazy or something, but i'm getting the vibe that you were not a Lindros fan

Don't blame him for his parents' actions and how they caused friction with the Flyers organeyezation, but the guy truly wanted to win and compete for the logo on the front of his jersey. That's not something you can say about most of these mercenaries we have playing today. Is that something caused by free agency, sure...but I felt it was so easy to be a fan of Lindros even if you didn't want the Flyers to win.

Missed the old flyers days

- Fast_Eddie_1

I have no issue with Lindros, one of the greatest players to ever play, belongs in the Hall of Fame and absolute should have his number retired in Philly.

Yeah, there was stuff that Mario could do that Wayne simply couldn't.

I don't feel like there were many passes or plays that 99 could make that I couldn't see 66 matching... 66 was more of a wizard than he had any right to be. I always thought of him as 99 in 88's body.

The Oilers were a markedly better team than the Penguins when Gretzky and Lemieux made their debuts, respectively.

I don't believe so. Back then, their practice jersey were either the plain ones with no trim, or the "Center Ice" jerseys. These were sold without players ever using them, kind of like the Hamburgler "Winter Classic" jerseys.

No, they actually sold these as "alternative" jerseys in the mid to late 1990's.

Everyone who designed sports jerseys was seemingly trying to make everything teal back in the mid-90's.

It's kind of like how much grunge singers changed every vowel to the letter "A".

That's what I said. Excellent drafting those first four seasons turned the Oilers around quickly. Started with Messier the first season. It was still an expansion team for all intents and purposes.

99 definitely benefited from a much better front office.

Not really what you said. Gretzky's first season was with a team of misfits and cast offs, but by season two, Messier, Anderson, Coffey and Kurri were in the lineup with him and by year three, those guys were all scoring 80+ points.

Lemieux went to the worst team in the NHL, and they stayed a bad team for several years before Patrick was able to rebuild them. By Gretzky's 4th season, the Oilers were in the SCF. They weren't struggling

Lemieux's team missed the playoffs his first 4 seasons. They were awful. Hell they didn't even crack .500 until Lemieux's 4th season.

No, Esche was a better playoff goalie that postseason than Cechmanek ever was. Cechmanek also had a mediocre regular season in LA that year.
