they're not terrified of the spotlight. you talk about them being treated like gods as if that's a good thing. they don't want that. they don't want to be hounded and gawked at while buying milk and bread. they don't want the excessive attention. they'll live with it if they have to, but they don't want to live with it to finish in 10th place. you won't see Canadian teams attract star players until Canadian teams start figuring out how to put a solid hockey program in place. and last i checked, not a single Canadian team looks like they're close to that.

I would trade kessel and gardiner for tavares

Crosby does it all.. He played phenomenal during the Olympics and only scored once (if I recall correctly). If he wanted to he could be more of a Toews type player but he has too much talent to let it goto waste.

this is all true.... but - and I'm not saying this because I suddenly believe Stamkos is signing with Toronto - Tampa was a no where land essentially until Yzerman took over.. and gave the management team credibility. Perhaps Shanahan can have a similar effect in Toronto.
