You are simply hilarious. 10.5 is very high for these two any more would have been completely ridiculous. ..by Any team...Yes even the leafs - Daddichronic
I agree with your post.
However you and I both know that they would have received 10.5 or higher on the open market.
Also what really hurts with these contracts is that there are TWO of them. Had it been only one player being signed it would have still hurt(but less).
A painful(but enviable) position to be in. |

If Kane or Toews would have made it to free agency they would have gotten a lot more money than 10.5 per year. The Oil would have probably paid them 12-15 million per year as would most of the teams in the league. When a team has 2 superstars that have delivered multiple cups and are just entering their prime it is a no brainer. The deals that don't make sense are the ones for aging stars that are past their prime and are given money and term based on their history , usually that they accomplished with a different team. - HawkfaninBC

In the cap-world, that's too much to spend on two guys. |

Or go picking at the bottom of the barrel come FA time as the leftovers have become a chance to hit a homerun with buyouts, cap issues, etc.
It's mid-july and still some very solid players out there. I see that trend continuing. - TyCamScore
Even though this was the final year for compliance buyouts? |

Meh, I think the only issue here is that both signed with the same team. As ridiculous as contracts are seemingly getting, I don't doubt for a second that certain GM's and/or owners wouldn't have found a way to dole out at least a million or so more per season in order to sign one of these guys individually.
Not that the Parise/Suter signings weren't crazy at the time, but outside of the ridiculously long terms for them, their deals look pretty reasonable in light of some of the deals being doled out lately. At least as far as cap hits go. |

I agree, they are definitely worth the money, it's just having them on the same team in a cap world will make it tricky going forward. |

I know the signings cause cap problems for the Hawks but I think they had to sign them both. They would have been toasted if either one had left. Sharp and Seabrook may have to go eventually probably Sharp first and don't forget they have to come up with money for Saad pretty soon too. |

Yes!
The Hawks will have to hope for the cap to continue to increase while at the same time having their youth pan out. Every(competitive) team going forward will have a certain amount of young guys on their team with "youth contracts"
The exception to the rule will be bottom dwellers that draft really, really well and all the youth reach their potential early, and at the same time. An example would be the Oilers. Had everything worked to perfection, and they had any resemblance of an NHL defensive pairing. They could have made some noise with young guys on the cheap. But that window is already closing(or closed).
