If your not using the third assistant spot for a coach, why not a guy like Gilmour who can teach and motivate your forwards. He already said he would be interested in the idea.

I was referring to tweaking mid season. I'd expect that gigs are totally different this year. Regardless I see your point
- OilerFan16

Apparently they were making adjustments, but they were still using some things that now they're going to get rid of entirely. I think some of the key guys ran out of steam towards the end of last year too. Looks like now they're going to try to build more of a bottom six that can take more minutes, hopefully that helps. I'm interested to see how guys like Rielly, Gardiner and Kadri do with more experience under their belt as well. If those guys can take a step forward that will be significant.

Isn't komarov a 3/4 liner at best?

Aren't you an Oilers fan? Isn't this a Leafs thread?

I'm interested in the idea of skydiving, doesn't mean I'll actually do it.

Shouldn't really be teaching defense at this level.... Defensive systems.

Guys the refuse to play defense or aren't very good aren't likely to change. Coach must implement a system that is best suited for his group.

- burn

I agree, if a guy has given no fcks his entire life about defense he is very unlikely to change

From 5 to 25 is a big jump.. 60 games and 11 points

I guess he can't do any worse...

Very Seldom do players who miss training camp/beginning of the season go on to have successful campaigns.

That's what I get told when I go over there

But you're welcome to stay.

And yes, Komarov is a 3/4 liner... a very effective one. He, along with the other acquisitions bring a lot of energy to a lineup that was lacking it, along with a bottom-6 that can be counted on to play actual hockey, so that we can roll 4 lines.

Big improvement over last year, where the lack of depth made every little injury very noticeable.

Clarkson, realistically, could not get any worse. If he can have a productive season and Lupul can stay relatively healthy, we might be in very good shape heading into April next year.

Teaching defense is harder than you think.
- OilerFan16

No it really isn't. I played 4 years of junior hockey. Defensive hockey is very simple to teach.

Teaching guys who have no desire to play defensive is not easy

The Leafs have many holes but I agree is terrible. He is the reason they lost to Boston he told them to try to shut them down. Boston was tired and if they kept skating the comeback was impossible. But saying that, they should also be able to hold a 3 goal lead for 10 minutes.

I just think Randy is too old school. Hockey has changed dramatically in even 3 years.

Let me also say, "No Timeout!". How could he not call a timeout?

Not sure why you wasted your time writing something as pointless as that, hiring one of the best leaf forwards in the past few decades to add a veteran presence for the young forwards moving up, which costs no assets is something I would be mulling over.

some people actually do go skydiving and it becomes a great experience they never forget. some people wussy out, but just because your scared doesn't mean it isn't a great idea.

Not sure how many times I could bring this up an it gets forgotten. He said every time they went to use their time out the horn sounded for a TV timeout, so using his was unnecessary.

And honestly, do you really think another 30 second break was going to change the outcome of that game?

Relax man, it's a joke. Nevermind, Nonis said they'll be only using two assistant coaches. I don't blame them either. Something along the lines of too many cooks in the kitchen.

I agree. Drove me nuts. As a coach you sometimes have to say enough is enough and make a statement. Not wait for the TV commercials to do it for you.

Too many cooks in the kitchen? It should be like Thunderdome.

Three head coaches enter, one head coach leaves.
