Oh yeah. I'm like 1/4 awake right now. I need to mainline coffee for a while longer. I had so much glaucoma medicine last night I still feel half-baked. I'm just kind of blank.

Oddly enough, I think all the Ramones were sedated at the end, especially Dee Dee when he overdosed on heron.

There are so many factors.
- systemtool

Main factors seem to be ...

Winning -- U.S. > Canada

$$$$ -- U.S. > Canada (state taxes)

Lifestyle -- U.S. > Canada (warm weather states)

Canadian markets have to create a better winning dynamic if they're going to compete for the best UFA's.

Bryan Berard is leading a very interesting retirement. First, there was his turn on Battle of the Blades (he deserved to win, dammit). Then there was his adventure as a private eye, where he helped bring down two con men that swindled millions from retired NHLers.
Now, speaking of eyes, Berard's right one continues to be a problem, and he's locked in a legal battle with the insurance company that paid him millions after the retinal tear and detached retina he suffered during his playing days.

Same kinda role on the bottom six, but Komarov is a smart guy who draws more penalties than he takes, whereas Ott is a dumb meathead who takes more penalties than he draws. Put simply, Ott is a liability, especially for a team like us who has enough trouble transitioning from defense.
- lumlums

He's a good veteran who can actually play. Versatile in wing or center. He's pretty good in his own end too. You're thinking of John Scott

I think playing in market where you aren't critisized daily and can go out in public in peace is a big factor that should fall under lifestyle.

We call those coaching stats "contract extensions".

It's funny how with all the focus on Toronto's pressure and Kessel's low-key persona that he went long-term here, as did Phaneuf, Lupul, Clarkson...people made a big thing out of Gorges not waiving to be traded here but plenty of guys have signed in Toronto recently when they didn't have to

I remember Bobby Mac talking about this issue and he said around the league yeah there are some guys who will say no way about playing in the big fishbowl, but at the same time he said don't underestimate the draw of the Blue and White, Original Six logos have a draw on players just like fans. Plenty of players really would like to play here. If they get on a roll and make a few playoff rounds, that winning-in-TDOT immortality factor will become an advantage.

Yep, that too. I think there are star players that would love to play in Toronto on a winner but until the Leafs get to the point where they are contenders they're going to lose the UFA battle b/c of all those other factors.

In the last 5 years?

Kovalchuk, Suter, Parise... Clarkson.

Not sure why people think climate is an issue. Minnesota has no trouble drawing UFAs and their climate is every bit as harsh as Canada's. Boston and Buffalo experience terrible winters too. Both draw UFAs. I think media is a huge factor. Taxes are in there too. And the fact that Canadian teams have been generally poorly run recently is another.

Media. Fishbowl.

They can't handle it. It's a shame they are female doges, but it's the truth.

Hockey is a team game that I don't think can be described well using advanced stats.
- TML60

The problem is that the game offers very little chance to establish good invidual measurements that will be consistent. Hell, even something as simple as hits is subjective and varies wildly from rink to rink.

Also, many writers have pointed out VERY plausible scenarios where on-ice events lead to a "good" advanced stat and yet a poor outcome.

Not to mention ... there is something f'd up when Sidney Crosby is like 69th in Corsi 2011-2014. That alone should make people re-think.

There are a bunch of Kings near the top, which would immediately tell me that individual stats are being affected by an entire team buying into a system. The fact that there are no Leafs anywhere near the top doesn't tell me they have crap players, it tells me that they don't have or won't buy into a good system.

The advanced stats of today are still in their infancy. They need work both in terms of what is being measured and more importantly, how it is being measured.

... it would be cool if the puck had a sensor and the players sticks had sensors and the goalie and nets had sensors so a computer could model and analyze what actually happened on the ice.

Then you would get some consistent and meaningful stats I think.

Taxes
Media
Carlyle
Phaneuf

... probably in that order. It is not difficult at all to figure out why players, for the most part, do not want to come to Toronto
