I disagree. Think he's a good player, good veteran and pretty useful in the bottom six. A Canadian version of Komarov, imo.
- systemtool

Same kinda role on the bottom six, but Komarov is a smart guy who draws more penalties than he takes, whereas Ott is a dumb meathead who takes more penalties than he draws. Put simply, Ott is a liability, especially for a team like us who has enough trouble transitioning from defense.

One of my all time faves...I passed up a couple of chances to see them live, and I never got another chance. Ramones and Nirvana are two bands I could have seen live but didn't and they died, kicking myself still.

Yup. I like the stats, but you can't make an argument for anything based upon any single one of them in a vacuum. I always start by comparing CorsiFor% with GoalsFor%. Gives an idea at least as to the quality of the possession and shots.

Take Kessel for instance; he has a poor CF% (44.1%), but very good GF% (53.1%). His Shooting % is always around 10% (give or take). This suggests to me that while he doesn't often maintain possession in the opposition zone, he is able to get himself into a position where he can take high percentage shots. Also, while he may lack a little defensively, that we are still much better with him on the ice than off it.

Hockey is a team game that I don't think can be described well using advanced stats. Baseball is a different story as it is more of an individualistic team sport, for lack of a better term. I understand what advanced hockey stats are trying to do but you can dissect the game to pieces and not really know any more than the average fan who is knowledgeable about the game and has an IQ greater than a radish.

True fans will notice who the coach trusts to put out in the defensive zone for a faceoff when the game is on the line. It's obvious that an offensively gifted player like Kessel should get many more offensive zone starts than defensive zone starts. Shots on goal, +/-, hits, blocked shots, pk/pp%, goals for/against are more rudimentary stats but they tell a lot about the game. Most stats, such as +/_, even if it is flawed, can tell you something about a game or a season. But I'd rather watch the game than read the box score afterward.

Btw, are there any basic or advanced stats on coaches not calling timeouts in a 3rd period meltdown in the 7th game of a playoff series? Just wondering.

No stats on timeouts as far as I'm aware, though I'm sure that Randy has a big "0" in that column!

As far as the stats go, I like them as you can establish trends over longer periods of time, which is great when you're like me and alcohol has reduced your memory to that of a goldfish
