Kessel has the same attitude towards the press that all players should mimic in this town...ignore them. Of course this drives them crazy, as they just can't understand why someone wouldn't think the world revolves around the oh so self important ink stained wretches.

They wanted Quinn out of town because he wouldn't give them the time of day, and worked Peddie and the other powers that be until he was let go, and replaced with Maurice, who was more media friendly, as if that's the only requirement that matters.

Hey! Didn't backread everything from yesterday. Anyone mention the Leafs signed Jamie Devane? I'm sure if it was mentioned it started a lively debate. (sarcasm)

Did you hear that they are looking at making Hyperion a movie. I have no idea how they would pull that one off.

Oilers-centric article, but very interesting.

The advanced stats guys need to do some work on getting better measurements. Their ideas aren't bad, but there are clearly holes.

Really? Ya the sedins didn't resign in their prime with Vancouver. Montreal hasn't had it fair share of star players, same with toronto in the 90's.
Get a grip on reality, the media is everywhere, twitter is everywhere, it's no longer big markets that have media scrutiny. Sure they may have more but it's has much of an an issue as you want it to be.
Elite superstar players don't sign with losing teams (for the most part, unless it's for money)and they usually sign with their draft team if the team is successful or they weren't traded

Montreal jas done just as well as the Rangers (pretty much). Yet guys seem to prefer New York to Montreal

Interesting article but I couldn't finish it. I got to the part about shots at net indicating time in the offensive zone and it reminded me of the 200ft goal Toskala let in and I had to stop reading.

Agreed. UFA should be where you pick up bargain players to complement your bottom six, not blow a wad (of cash!) over some "superstar"...
- lumlums

That's a massive problem though. UFA day is where 3rd liners get paid like 2nd and even 1st liners, eespecially the sexy post decent playoff guys. Bolland, Ott, Boyle, Clutterbuck, Stahlberg, Poulliot, Kulemin, Tootoo, Sobotka, Clowe, Clarkson. Etc.

Stay away from bottom 6 forwards in UFA (for the most part)

You're right but the Leafs just got some good cheap bottom six talent.

Yup. I like the stats, but you can't make an argument for anything based upon any single one of them in a vacuum. I always start by comparing CorsiFor% with GoalsFor%. Gives an idea at least as to the quality of the possession and shots.

Take Kessel for instance; he has a poor CF% (44.1%), but very good GF% (53.1%). His Shooting % is always around 10% (give or take). This suggests to me that while he doesn't often maintain possession in the opposition zone, he is able to get himself into a position where he can take high percentage shots. Also, while he may lack a little defensively, that we are still much better with him on the ice than off it.
