A player had super possession stats, must have been a great game except the two blatant give-aways that directly led to two goals that cost the team the game that did not show up on advanced stat sheet, hey but his corsi and fenwick were awesome! |

A goalie let in three goals according to the stats, without watching the game he must have played crap, it is the only plausible explanation. - LeafMan
yes if there were 10 shots but on 45 shots no way
pk let them down on a 5 on 3 followed by the 5 on 4
damn that major |

Advanced stats give you a good base when you're not able to watch a player play. But you can't have poor stats and be playing good, doesn't make sense. - peddy-93
the polarization on the issue is so stupid that it almost makes me cry. there's a convo going on in the main thread about ROR. his advanced stats aren't great, so he's not that good. he puts up goals and points? doesn't matter. he sucks because his Corsi is 48%. there's more to hockey than points, and there's more to hockey than possession. |

Better to use stats for a larger sample rather than just a game. Every player turns the puck over that leads to goals. |

Wasn't he sick? Or the injury/sickness excuse applies only to players who are still playing with the leafs?
Also, Wasn't he used in a checking role that year (something he's not suited for) yet maintained decent possession numbers? - Pecafan Fan
He was... but that's irrelevant. I'm not talking about why he was bad, he just was.
And that's the point- looking at possession numbers, he looks like he had a fine season.
Watching him play tells a different story... the same one the team saw when they bought him out. |

well his stats would also indicate that he was on the ice for 2 goals against...
I know you love to ridicule those stats so i'm not sure why I bother to answer |

People need to be careful not to solely base a player on certain stats only. There's flaws with every stat, but depends the way you use them. |

Yes but it shows 4 other players on as well, you see?
It is flawed, garbage in garbage out. Yes you use it as a complimentary tool but many put too much stock in the numbers without other variables taken into consideration. |

Honestly, I can't for the life of me understand why people REFUSE to see advanced stats just like every other stats. As a complement (and a deep one at that) to the game. People only try to find flaws in them instead of trying to find what value they hold... - Pecafan Fan
It's not all advanced stats, it's CORSI. I don't think anyone has a problem with Zone starts or points per 60 or blah blah.
It's all CORSI. Because it's hockey's version of QBR. You can't have a shot attempt without having possession, so shots MUST = possession!
Why people won't just refer to CORSI as it is, shot attempt ratios, and stop saying good 'possession' teams and bad 'possession' teams.
It's insulting to statistics! |

it's not like baseball. individual ballplayers can be analyzed on their numbers only. but hockey players have a symbiotic relationship. their stats are dependent on 11 other hockey players on the ice. |

it is. but at the same time, i want my team to have more shot attempts. and i don't buy into some teams having a more selective shot process. every team is the same. they take the shots that are there. |
