yes but he put up 50 last year and was on pace for 50 in the lockout season. think it's safe to call him a 50 point player right now. and how was he given away if he was traded for Rick Nash? - DoubleDown

I think he means he will be given away in 2 years. |

Only if players are also allowed to rip up contracts.

Steve Ott appeared on Sportsnet The Fan 590's Brady & Walker Friday morning to discuss his new two-year deal with the St. Louis Blues. Being a Toronto-based show, Andrew Walker asked the centre if the Toronto Maple Leafs expressed any interest in his services.
"We had maybe one talk with them, and then we called them a bunch of times with no calls back," Ott said. "That's about as honest as I can get. I guess they didn't have much interest at all."

The game was just fine before they brought in the rule. A lot of rule changes were brought in to "create" more offense because offense slowed down after the 80's. There is nothing wrong with a 1-0 game or even a tie. The game wasn't broke in the 60's and 70's but somewhere in the 90's and later the deep thinkers started tinkering and common sense went out the window. - TML60
In their defence, the game was truly horrid in the 90s. It was barely watchable.
It was a "garage league." |

i don't see it working on either side. that's too much salary going to Columbus. and if you're Toronto, that signifies a rebuild and you might as well deal Kessel next. - DoubleDown
How is that a rebuild... Tyutin is older than phaneuf, johansen is only 2 years younger than kadri....
Frees us space to sign next year's free agents is about it... |

ha! don't think so. but you'd see a lot more holdouts and contract renegotiations, like you do in the NFL. |

Partially guaranteed (NFL) or player option years (NBA) take care of this. Completely non-guaranteed contracts would never work, both sides would constantly try to walk. |

Duby put up 50 twice in his career, he's two seasons removed from being given away. These big ass contracts for grinders are (frank)ing moronic mistakes. - AdamFrench
The difference between Dubinski and Clarkson is that Dubinski actually grinds. |

you get the best player in the deal (or the player who WILL be the best player in the deal) but you give up whatever depth you have, so the team you're left with would probably suck. |

Yeah, I thought it said it all when the SCR between Calgary and Tampa didn't have a single lead change in a seven game series, if I remember correctly. I thought the changes they made coming out of the cancelled season were great and the hockey has been much better. |

I remember how every internet hockey expert hated the obstruction rules.
I thought they were 10 years overdue.
I can't stand how the NHL referees see a hold, then consider the time left on the clock and the score before deciding if it is a penalty or not.
If it's a hold, it's a hold. Period. |

oh i remember those days. there were a lot of games where you knew that when your team gave up that first goal, it was lights out. |

I remember going to a Leafs-Devils game where the Devils refused to play hockey (and won the game). I felt like leaving in the second period - it simply was not entertaining to watch. |

the part I miss were the battles in front of the net - now it's just wussyville in front of the net. Although it seems in the West they can play more of a warriors game in front of the net....but in the East people just get to stand around and do what they want. Cross checks, slashes and punches should be full on legit in front of the net |

I agree completely. I remember I was so excited when hockey came back, I was watching a bunch of non-Leaf games and it was so different from the clutch 'n' grab era. I was sitting there saying wow, this is (frank)ing awesome. |

Really, it was often a hopeless feeling if your team was down a goal in the third. You would hope that they could just crash the net and maybe a puck would go in. You can't sit back and try to suffocate the game out anymore.
