Analysts are going to look at last years stats and career years. I just don't buy that national analysts watch enough of any team to understand subtleties within a team. They don't need to, just look at stats and have a strong opinion is all that's really necessary to be interesting. I'm not saying I love this trade. I don't, but not do I think it's aweful. It's in the "Let's see" category.

As far as trade value, Hartnell's contract could have been seen as having negative value. There might have been 4 offers on the table, but all 4 had bad contracts coming back. Umberger might have been the only situation that was palatable. I still would have thought they could have gotten more than a 4th rounder coming back, but I'm sure Hextall wanted a higher pick, but couldn't get it. That's pretty telling to me.

As far as Hartnell having more value on the team than what came back, it's obvious that Hexy and Berube wanted him gone

A lot of the NHL analysts are former players themselves... I am sure they understand the subtleties within a team a bit more than we do.

Flyers didn't need Ott. Glad they stayed away.

Everything is in the wait and see category. In terms of tangible value, I felt they were better off keeping him than trading him for Umberger if it was, indeed, the best offer on the table.

It's an old picture, before Raptor Jesus thought people would accept him for what he really is...

But the point I have made numerous times... He has been successful with and without G. He routinely (over his career) has been on the top producing line.
- jak521

Sure. But he's getting older, and he's been on lines with some pretty good players while in Philly. We'll see what happens. I feel no ill-will toward Hartnell, nor do I hope he fails or anything like that.

Is it kosher to assume a guy used in a defensive role is pretty much necessarily going to see more corsi events against?
- BulliesPhan87

For the Flyers, G and Coots' CA/60 were roughly the same, but I suspect that G's was from spending so much time in the o-zone, where Coots was probably doing a lot more in terms of active shot-event suppression (aka being a defensive beast).

I think understanding them, and knowing what they are for each team and player, is two different things. Think of the enormity, of the number of teams, situations and players? I think national analysts do sort of a cursory flyby on a lot of situations. They couldn't possibly know the complete lowdown on every player and situation with a team. That's why I chuckle when I read what so and so said on XM radio the other day. How much time have they actually spent watching the player and the team. The local qualified analysts such as Bill Meltzer, are a much better source

They understand hockey leaps and bounds above us all. But how many games in full length do you think analysts watch, get to know a team's philosophy, understand locker room dynamics (specifically, I don't mean in general). God just read what many of them say about the Flyers goalie situation. They still roll their eyes that mason was signed for what he did. Do you think they actually watched him the past year and a half or just wrote him off as the same player he was in Columbus?

Not necessarily... there's quite a lot of group-think and mental conditioning going on behind closed doors, starting from when players are kids... it's not a coincidence that most ex-player GMs/coaches/analysts all speak and think in terms of the same set of platitudes and cliches... basically the same vernacular and thought processes that were drummed into them by all the ex-players they encountered along the way up.

Already have 2 goalies that are much better options.

Really have no idea how Thomas or even Brodeur could get NHL jobs at this point.

Of course they don't, after they trade for E. Kane and draft Ekblad.

I should have been more specific... I meant they understand the dynamic of teams. They know how hockey teams are affected by certain moves and what not. Now, I would never suggest that they know the ins and outs of a particular team. Maybe a guy like Bill Clement might know the Flyers a bit more, but i didnt mean it like that.

EDIT: Im still to vague..

What I am attempting to say (poorly I may add) is that the former players know what its like to lose a guy like Hartnell.

(frank), I dont even know what I was saying lol
