I think Couturier is ready to take a little bit of that on himself. I love it when he gets an attitude. He is big and getting stronger. He also seems to be one of those who gets in Malkins face.

But it is fun to watch when Couturier plays with an edge, add that do his stellar defensive game and he can have the ability to really piss off opposing players.

- MBFlyerfan

I'm still absolutely convinced that Couturier will peak as perennial Selke candidate and top out around 20-25 goals and 50-60 points.

the consequences are apparently columbus, ohio

And that was for the implied expectattions. Now that it's in writing do we send them to Winnipeg? Calgary?

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

They need someone who can play with an " edge" but be a little more responsible than 19.

Last season Hartnell took 1.3 penalties per/60. He drew 1.6 penalties/60.

Last season Umberger took 0.3 penalties per/60. He drew 0.8 penalties/60

Umberger will help in that regard, but it really just means the Flyers will be seeing less PPs and less PKs. That may not be a good thing if they aren't any better at 5v5.

Interesting thought. The question remains whether either is a good enough playmaker to get Vinny the puck when he wants it.
I also really liked the Read/Coots chemistry and would hate to break it up. I'd actually like to see Umberger with those two for a few lines to see if that has potential to really be great.

- FlyersGrace

I think both Read and Couturier are good enough players to play with other people. Plus I think a line of Umberger-Couturier-Simmonds can be a great line on the cycle and still good defensively.

Maybe, but for whatever reason, it seems that the brainless penalties, which Hartnell seemed to take a lot of, are the ones that always end up costing us.

Agreed

Hextall was very honest IMO when he said they may have to take a step back to move forward. Squeaking in as a 7/8 seed is not the end of the world, nor really would be missing the playoffs, as having a lottery pick in 2015 is a damn good consolation prize.

Doesn't shock me at all. In fact I like it. Implied expectations get ignored in every job. But if they are defined in writing then you can't complain you weren't aware. You can still ignore them but then you realize that there are consequences. At least I hope there are consequences!
- FlyersGrace

I agree that you can't take anything for granted, but I also assumed professional athletes knew it was in their best interest to stay in good shape, not only for the upcoming season, but also for the longevity of their career. There is no real "down time" for anybody who wants to stay in shape, let alone perform at a high level.

I wonder if Jake got a special letter telling him to put down the beer and to refuse seconds of mom's tasty dinners?

The fact that the organization felt the need to send a letter is more than a little surprising to me, as if the hundreds of thousands to millions they send to the players isn't enough of a reminder that this is indeed a business and a job and there are expectations to be met.
- wolfhounds

I'm guessing it's more a matter of Chief asking for the proverbial 110% this summer.

The few guys who showed up sub-100% were already shamed.

I think you saw Couturier play with more of an edge this year and i think it is becaue of the confidence he gained. berube put him in a position to succeed when he took over.

I still see Vinny being moved before the season starts. I just think it is better for everyone. It allows more flexibilty with the roster. I think it is just a standoff right now between Flyers and nashville with each trying to get the most but a deal will be done.

As for the Vet that the Flyers are interested in that Hextall reffered too at the town hall, I am hoping it is maybe one of the following:

D.Winnik
S.Ott
D.Setugatchi
D.Penner
T. Galiardi

Reason being if you move Vinny then two of these guys can play in top 6 and three can play pretty much anywhere in top 9 possibly 4th line. I think the roster has more flexibility in being able to move guys around then.

Only Giroux draws more penalties than Hartnell on the Flyers. It may seem like he takes penalties at inopportune times, which he does, but he draws them at opportune times as well.

I am thinking they have some sort of handshake with someone. Just weird that Ott isn 't signed yet. Seems like there was plenty of interest in him. Just guess nothing to confirm it.

Anyone else mad we didn't take a stab at heatley? I know he hasn't done well last few seasons, but for 1 year 1 mil. Pretty low risk and he still can shoot.

This might be true, but if they are waiting for a Vinny trade, they (the FA they have the handshake with) might want to consider moving on.
