Both of these broadcasting teams are kinda terrible.

My least favorite announcer, slightly worse than Edwards. I respect the guy for all that he's done, but his voice resembles that of a man pleasuring himself with a mouth full of marbles, and when he gets excited, it becomes a dying turkey pleasuring itself with a mouth full of marbles. He's also (somehow) more of a homer than JJ, and it's not even close.
- jmatchett383

The homerism doesn't bother me really, most announcers are homers for the teams they work for. Jackson is just an awful announcer.

I like Jeanneret's enthusiasm. He almost burst through his turtleneck when Campbell leveled Umberger.

Totally. Pittsburgh feeds are terrible as well. People need to listen to some other feeds before bashing JJ. He really isnt bad.

This.

I don't get the JJ hate, really.

It always cracks me up when people complain about the local home broadcast being homerish.

Not to mention the fact that their salaries are paid by the team, not the broadcasting network.

JJ gets a lot of crap for is "and they say it's onside" line, but he says that for both teams.
- Feanor

He does.

And what is JJ supposed to say there if it's a close call that he doesn't think the officials got right or was real close? Is he not supposed to acknowledge it if it's close?

By "the situation" what I was referring to was that the defense, while being experienced, is largely over payed due to FA signings instead of development. None of them are bad defensemen, but as a collective whole are a little mismatched. Paying as much as they are have put them up against the cap. Whether you want to call it cap problems or not, they are uncomfortably against the cap. I expect next season's cap will bring some relief, but this exponential cap increases every year will slow down (and hopefully curb some of the FA outrageousness).

I liked Homer, but IMO worked from the "Get in the dance and anything can happen" playbook, whereas Hexy really seems to have a longterm vision that won't change from year to year.

I like the forwards the Flyers have a lot. I'm not a big fan of the defense. I tend to think that Homer left the team where the core forwards' prime years will be used waiting for the defensive prospects to mature.

- mmcclatchy

Who were they going to develop? They drafted Bourdon, Marshall and Sbisa then didn't have a pick in the first or second round for two yrs. We know what happened to those three guys. Holmgren acquired young Dmen the best way he could. They brought in Carle, Coburn, Parent and Alt. Two of them developed just fine and we're waiting on one.

He added Jason Smith, Pronger and Timmonen along with Mezaros, Grossman, Schenn, Streit and MacDonald. Once they maintained their picks he immediately started addressing the lack of depth on the back end. He took 3 in 2012 including Gostisbehere and took 4 the following year.

There hasn't been much to develop until recently if you look at it.

He does it almost every time. It can't be that close that often. It loses its impact if he just says it every time the puck moves across the line.

I think the cap issues are overblown, and every June and July we get into the cap panic stages of the off season. Secondly, a large reason for having to overspend for defenseman was the injury to Pronger. And that wasn't anyone's fault. And I think you can definitely say that in the beginning of his tenure, they sacrificed some youth. But for the most part, since the trades of Carter and Richards, Holmgren has stuck with the young core that he built, and hasn't waverd from that. He also took the team from last overall to the Cup Finals.

Like I said, failure to draft and develop defenseman is a legitimate criticism that has hurt this team. And that happened under Holmgren's watch.

If you look at a broadcast team like Washington's, they're pretty even. There's being a homer, and then there's the Jack Edwards' of the world.

The more I think about Homer's past moves the more I want to give him a bit of a pass after the Pronger injury. It's almost cliche at this point but it put this org in a serious hole and he was scrambling to get out of it (I will refer to it henceforth just AP: after Pronger). Wish he had got a young D in the Richards/Carter trades but they were done BP not AP. UC?

I just don't have expectations of impartiality out of a local broadcast. Those guys know where their bread is buttered.

I just don't want them to be annoying (Edwards) or just plain (frank)ing moronic (Paul Steigerwald).

That's fine. But a guy like Jeanerette, I legitimately don't like his voice, and his overdramatic calls whenever a goal/fight/penalty occurs really kills a game for me. Perfect examples:

1) Lindros was getting pestered by Barnaby one game, so he finally dropped them and started to pummel poor defenseless Barnaby. RJ acted like this was a suspendable offense and actually said Lindros was out of control ("You may be the best player in the game, but..." something or other).

2) When Barnaby jumped Garth Snow after faking an injury, RJ called it like it was a brave act of self-preservation that had just won the Sabres the Stnaley Cup.

Not nearly as bad as Edwards literally laughing at an injured player, but not too far off either.

Incorrect. Chris Pronger doesn't use light butter.
