But the point I have made numerous times... He has been successful with and without G. He routinely (over his career) has been on the top producing line.

Scott Hartnell has been on some of the best Flyer lines in recent history going back to 2008.

There is nothing that will make this trade look better on the surface.

What you have to hope for is what has been discussed: Umberger's versatility, taking fewer penalties, etc. And even if those things come true, you're still going to miss some offense in the short term.

Where this trade actually pays off is when Couturier's contract is up, you have some money freed up to extend him.

Unfortunately, we must stick with cap issues and what to do with Vinny.

Discuss.

Morin supposedly got bigger because it is his goal to make the team out of camp. Sanheim is a pretty big dude himself for a newly 18 year old kid (supposedly 6'2 195). To be honest.. I dont even know who is invited.. Ghost, Laughton, etc?

I should have been more specific... I meant they understand the dynamic of teams. They know how hockey teams are affected by certain moves and what not. Now, I would never suggest that they know the ins and outs of a particular team. Maybe a guy like Bill Clement might know the Flyers a bit more, but i didnt mean it like that.

EDIT: Im still to vague..

What I am attempting to say (poorly I may add) is that the former players know what its like to lose a guy like Hartnell.

(frank), I dont even know what I was saying lol

I'm definitely not saying that Umberger is better than Hartnell. In a bubble Hartnell is better and I think that is what most analysts will see and talk about. Sometimes a lesser player works better for a team than the more talented one. I'm hoping this is the case. After reading summaries of the STH town meeting, I'm thinking this was a "Culture Change" move as much as anything else.

There's a clear hole on paper at 1LW. I definitely do not believe Umberger is filling that hole. To me though that 1LW was already a hole and the Flyers moved a stop-gap with a long term contract that was only going to be looking worse moving forward.

I am okay with a step back this year. This is not a cup team and it will take some time to undo the situation Homer had the team in.

That's great...except that Couturier's new deal will need to kick in 1 year before Umberger's deal expires.

Sure can...but then you're adding $1.6M and $1.5M to the roster for the 3rd and 4th year, respectively.

Which is a lot less than he is getting paid for the final year and less than Hartnell would be if he was bought out at that time.

Hey Bill, Any truth to the rumors Ville Leino might be looking for a camp tryout? I could see taking a Flyer on him for an amount easily buried in the minors should something happen.

Despite his horrible years in Buffalo, the Ville we had in Philly would be the perfect complement to be on Vinnie's Left. A skill based Left Wing who has mobility and playmaking skill. Maybe bring him in to see if he can click with Lecavalier, should we not be able to deal him. If not, no harm no foul.

You can't play Lein0 with Vinny. That would be a defensive trainwreck.
