Leafs would probably have to eat 15 to 20 percent of his salary...Nonis is in the Mike Gillis territory of GM's. - LeftCoaster
He's pretty much there with the Clarkson signing and the ongoing goalie controversy between Bernier and Reimer.

I remember when the Leafs made the playoffs and I thought they were finally on the up and up. Then Clarkson got a contract. And Bozak, and Phaneuf, and Kessel....
But hey, Komarov is back! - TheJerseyDevil1
These players are the reason why the Leafs made the playoffs dumbass!
Phaneuf is the only captain to play a playoff game in 10 years. He is the entire defence. Loser like Gunnarsson, Gleeson, Franson are to soft. |

What goalie controversy? One goalie played the majority and the other very little. |

They should only really trade him if they think they want to trade him if not they should not trade him if they think they shouldn't trade him but trade him if they don't trade him or don't trade him if they do trade him. |

Well little hope that this will turn into anything except trolling the Leafs by fanbases hardly in great positions themselves. Well I suppose everyone wants to feel like they are in a better situation than someone else. Good for self-esteem.
At this point I think the trade Phaneuf thing is just a media entity. If management actually felt the pressure to do anything they would have fired more than the assistants and dumped a good chunk of the bottom 6.
Value isn't through the roof and yet it's not nearly as bad as the people trying to lol about it want it to be. If cap was retained on a deal, it'd just be because cap has value as much as picks and players do.
As to the poll the answer should be the same for any player. Yes, if the trade makes sense. At the same time no reason to get rid of him for no reason. Need him to be one of the guys holding the line while the defensive prospects continue developing. Better he take the brunt of responsibility and criticism while they stay relatively sheltered....relatively. |

I dont understand why everyone thinks Phaneuf is signed to such a bad contract? I would be far more concerned with Clarkson. I would take Phaneuf over Orpik for 5 years and Niskanen for 7. When a team is in decline they always look for the higher salaries to blame but the truth is, he is still a top defender in this league.
If the Islanders could land him, even without Toronto holding any money back I would be really happy. He is still a beast. He also would instantly be our best defender lmao.
Toronto should not trade him. He is not the problem at all. He is someone you try to compliment next to him and make a dangerous tandem. |

If I'm Toronto, I offer Bozak, Phaneuf and 1st for ROR. They'd have to either eat money or absorb a contract from colorado too - BodyCheckRadio
Wow! That was absolutely - bar-none - the stupidest trade proprosal I've seen in awhile!
Bozak and RoR are esentially the same player. Bozak is cheaper (or will be) has a slightly better PPG last year and over their careers, and he meshs well with Kessel. Even just a swap of the two would be questionable. But no....
You want to throw in Dion....a top 2-3 spot defenseman who can play good minutes, can skate and has a big body he likes to throw around. Does he have warts? Sure.....and the contract MAY be a bit higher than his worth, but thats subjective and quite honestly he would have gotten that and probably more if he hit UFA. Like him or not he's a valuable asset and he's not going to be given away for a bag of pucks. But wait.....that's not all....
You'd also throw in a 2015 first round draft pick, in the deepest draft in the last 10 years, on a team that could very conceivably be a lottery team!
If Joe Sakic was offered that he'd jump on that in a heartbeat with the getaway car revved up and waiting to squeal the tires! |

not sure it makes sense to trade Phaneuf. Leafs have too many key guys in or entering their prime for them to think too long term. given what they gave up for Kessel, they should be doing everything in their power to surround him with the best possible team they can as he enters his prime year. being patient while Kessel plays out his mid-late 20s is stupid. |

I don't know, I give the edge to Bozak. He can do it all, ROR is one dimensional.

exactly all of this ^
Anyone who thinks his contract is an albatross is clueless. In two years time it will look like a steal for a top pairing dman. |

Phaneuf's partners have been Holzer AHL defensmen,Kostka barely an NHL defensmen and Gunnarason a 4-5 pairing defensmen for his entire career I Toronto. He gets the most mins in th NHL against the best players in the NHL all year every year. He is at the top of the league in defensive zone starts. What I am saying is he gets the toughest mins in the NHL while being paired with bottom pairing defensmen and still puts up good stats. He is a good defensmen. |
