Orpik grets 5.5 million, but people will only consider taking Dion at 5 million? - RogerRoeper
no
This is one of the problems with the league. People trying to justify a bad contract by comparing to another bad contract. Both of those are horrible horrible deals. |

Well, the poop tons of Pens fans don't help with the lack of love around the NHL fans. What would you, if you were Hextall, want from the Wings for Giroux? Mantha and Nyquist off the table. - YzermanIsTheMan
Honestly I would not be able to trade him. It's too hard to find a legit number one center especially with his talent. If I had to trade him both of those guys would have to be on the table plus Dylan Larkin and draft picks and I'll throw in Grossmann |

So if Dion is UFA on July 1st, what would he have made?
I really take issue with these moronic "Dion is worth 4-5 million at best" comments. They're stupid. |

Might be?? Really?
Here's the players you listed plus a couple more
Over the past 4 seasons in the NHL
1. Crosby 174GP 263PTS 1.47 PPG
2. Malkin. 209GP. 251PTS. 1.20 PPG
3. Stamkos 249GP. 285PTS. 1.14 PPG
4. Giroux. 289GP. 303PTS. 1.05 PPG
5. Getzlaf. 270GP. 269PTS. 0.99 PPG
6. Tavares, Datsyuk, Kane. 0.97 PPG
9. Toews. 268GP. 261PTS. 0.95 PPG
10. Ovechkin. 283GP. 265PTS. 0.94 PPG
11. Kopitar. 286GP. 261PTS. 0.91 PPG
12. Bergeron. 283GP. 215PTS. 0.76 PPG
13. Carter. 255GP. 183PTS. 0.72 PPG
I mean I know there's more than just how many point a player produces in judging a player but come on he deserves some credit and not just a might in the top 10 centers... - RobFlyers#1
Based on the last two seasons alone he isn't top 5 to me, but he's very close

Someone else may have given him the same amount. We dont know. Maybe less term. But the thing is trading assets plus paying that contract is an issue. Thats why UFA's get more. Because GM's dont have to give up assets. |

If Phaneuf would have hit UFA he would have received the same or more than he did on his contract he has now |

I saw what Washington did. There's no debate. He would have been the # 1 D-Man on the market easily. |

Trading Phaneuf isn't the answer because it can't be the answer. So leaf management need to figure out how to build a competitive team around Dion's particular skill set, which if surrounded by the right players, wouldn't be bad and that contract wouldn't look like an albatross. Easier said than done. But doable. I want a leaf/Habs playoff series. |

10.5 a year! WAY TO MUCH. Kane and Toews are awesome, no doubt. But 10.5Million for 8 years straight?!!! Holly crap, that is almost 1/3 their salary. I expect a big name or two leaving next season via trade. Maybe Sharpie... Great players, but way to much to be spending on two guys. I thought 7.5 a year for Suter and Parise was scary, can't imagine what Hawks fans are going through. |

I think you're being too generous. I think he's a bottom pairing dman making nearly the most money in hockey. I can't recall other dmen making mistakes, but I have seen first hand Dion making them. I'm glad he had to go on national t.v. to apologize for his ill timed pinch against Boston in the playoffs. I can't believe he's gotten away with it for so long. I mean you see all the time players having to go on national t.v. to apologize for mistakes they made in the game.
- walshyleafsfan
Seriously?
You need to watch more hockey if this is the case. ALL NHL defensemen make mistakes, even guys like Weber. In fact if you pay a bit more attention, you'll find better defensemen tend to make MORE mistakes simply because they get more ice time. They are usually better at getting back into position after, but they still make mistakes.
Obviously Dion being the 3rd highest paid d-man is wrong at the moment, but in 3 or 4 years after all the other top 60 or so D get their new contracts under a rising cap, his contract will probably be pretty average.

Good one maybe we could also say that with the raise Kane received today he won't have to beat up the cab driver and skip the fair. |

Phaneuf is not going anywhere. He will be a Leaf for a long time. Great contract. Great Player. Great Captain. Oiler trolls don't let the door hit you on the way out.
Leafs have too much class to sign a guy for 7 years and $7 mill to trade him 8 days after it kicks in. - 13LEAFS01

Just a shorter timeline. Things change, players grow up/older. Better competition, players fall off, etc etc. I think it's interesting to compare both to see if things are possibly heading in a certain direction you know?
Last 4 seasons combined? Yes top 5.
Last 2 seasons? He's just outside for me.
Still a phenomenal player |

The Leafs need to get stronger defensive players, so Phaneuf can go back to offense, that's where he thrives.
But they shouldn't be building the d-corps around him... focus should be around Rielly. Phaneuf role in addition to being our #1 d-man is to allow Rielly the time to develop without being exposed to top competition. Luckily, the guys they need to bring in to make Phaneuf more useful are the same as the guy's they're going to need for Rielly and Gardiner. |

I hate Rielly because he can't just spell his name "Reilly" like every other Reilly ever in the history of anything. |

Its hard for me to admit I've been a closet Hawks fan for years. My dad's father was a huge Chicago fan and took me to a ton of BH games when I was a kid while my dad took me to a ton of RW games. I do like the Hawks, just not nearly as much as the Wings.. and there was that rivalry.
I've never liked the Blues, never thought highly of them, so it'd be a push for me to support the Blues. And I'm sure its the same for a Blues fan about becoming a Hawks fan. Deal? - YzermanIsTheMan
I could never agree to root for the Hawks under any circumstance |
