just like Schnieder.

BTW, Schneider has more NHL games under his belt than Bernier.
Both in the regular season and the playoffs.

edit: and better stats overall as well

He'll get 6 even if the Leafs miss the playoffs.

Assuming he has a similar year as last?

Assuming that he's a #1 goalie.

They all get paid very well.

So develop Granberg. From what I've seen on the marlies, he could pretty much skate rings around Franson. He's a righty as well, so could slot into the third line nicely

The sad thing is that he would be an improvement.

He's in the drivers seat but I'm not sure they're 100% yet on Bernier's consistency and he still has some things to prove. If they decide he's the #1 guy and that they want to lock him up long term than I totally agree. Lots of things can happen between now and then though. Again, I hope he proves he's worth it this year.

..and Varlamov who didn't accomplish much of anything before signing his extension with the Avalanche.

was in the middle of his 3rd consecutive season as a starter for the Avs, and in the middle of a season that he got them into the playoffs and finished 3rd overall in the league and was a vezina finalist.

I don't know what you concider "not much", but regardless this is certainly more than Schnieder, no?

That is the goal isn't it? To improve the team at any position especially from within.

Iginla should (in theory) help out a bit with that... his numbers represent an increase on many of their guys.

To be honest, I think they need more help on the back end to really help get their time with the puck back up to snuff

You seem to forget Schneider has 143 NHL games under his belt.

And put up very good numbers.

#1 goalies are getting paid big time... what can I say, that's how it goes.

BTW Schnieder 2+years older. He had only 70NHL games to his name at the same time Bernier currently is.

I missed the convo (I'm sure it was riveting) yesterday after the Kane and Toews signings. I think those deals are a good indication that the players/agents are winning the battle in how those big back-diving contracts are being used to compare salary. I.E. Weber is really a 11.5 milly guy not a 7.8 guy ..Suter is a 10 milly guy not a 7.5 guy. Curious to see what approach PK takes.

Has never played more than 45 games. That isn't #1 goalie. He's been a backup (and a split 1a/b last year).

Agreed - the good ones are. Quick look at capgeek and it looks like about 15 guys are locked into term above 5/yr. After those guys you get into the Niemi's and Halak's and Mason's ....If Bernier has another good year he'll get paid. If he leaves some doubt then the Leafs have some options b/c he's still a RFA.

saw talk the other day comparing the salaries from years ago (before lockout #1) and now..... Guys were getting $11mil a year back then. Also said that the cap has messed up structure where the stars aren't really getting paid the huge dollars they used to and that 3rdliners dollars have exploded. IMO that may have to do with 2nd/3rd tier teams signing these 3rdliners to inflated contracts because they miss out on the stars.
