Missing a lot of it. What is common sense about calling a 12 goal scorer a high reward player and a guy that hasn't played a game yet a low reward??

Can we wait till we see this Kontiola before writing him off?? You are aware that he lead his KHL team in scoring and put up strong number in the Olympics and Worlds??

it's high reward because this is one of the greatest goal scorers of his generation earning $1 million on a 1-year deal. and he's only 33. he's lost a step or two, yeah, and he was never all that quick to begin with. but he's still a big body and he's still got a killer release. best case, he's a guy they can plug next to Getzlaf and score 30. worst case, he's depth/insurance guy who costs virtually nothing.

Yup, definitely fits the mold of low-risk, high reward... and while his seasons lately haven't been up to par with his time in Ottawa, he's only had one truly bad season, playing on a team that doesn't put much emphasis on scoring.

$6 million for a very good starting goalie? that's the going rate. very good chance that in a few years, the deal ends up looking very good for them.

He got more than some other guys that have proven more/done more.

in fairness, the advanced stats guys were crapping on the Avs all year and they predicted a quick flameout for them in the the playoffs.
- DoubleDown

The predicted decline never came.

if they drop next year do you attribute that more to what happened last year, or the loss of Stastny??

I don't necessarily see him playing beside Getz, but maybe Kesler.

(frank) sakes that team.....

Look at the top teams for a minute:

Krejci-Bergeron
Toews-Richards
Getzlaf-Kesler
Crosby-Malkin
Kopitar-Carter
Backes-Stastny

Even non-playoff teams, to an extent

Seguin-Spezza
Tavares-Grabo

Then our boys: Bozak-Kadri

The talent gap is enormous... (frank)ing (frank) (frank)

yes for sure. i agree with that. but he was lights out last year. he got (frank)ed in the W column by historically poor shootout performances by the Devils and the team probably could have made the POs if he was the full time starter. the club has confidence in him and they already invested a top-10 pick in him. he wasn't going to sign a long term deal for anything less, not coming off a season where he had to split starts. so the only other option was to offer him a short term deal that would take him to UFA and possibly alienate him. to me, that's a far bigger risk than giving him $6 million per.

you obviously don't get it because you're laughing at the idea of it being high-risk, high-reward.

To be honest I had a couple last night as well, but it was over supper with one of Mrs Lums bridesmaids who's been put on a project here and had just arrived in Edmonton
