Shanahan says their July 1 was "strategic." Got most of the players they wanted.

Both of them?

Compare the cap numbers when Toews and Kane signed to when Tavares signed, is there a big difference.
- LeafMan

was only 2 years diff. i agree that JT left money on the table with that deal. i think everyone at the time said it was a great deal. but it's not like that deal will cost him $10-$15 million. when all is said and done, whatever he missed out on with this deal will be a drop in the bucket compared to his overall career earnings.

is this like Bruke saying that they had Rielly #1 overall?
- DoubleDown

That pick is looking dam good right now. If it wasn't for his injury that year he might have been in talks for number 1, you never know.

JT's first year was $4M, so his cap number is $5.5 AAV. There's was $6.3, cause they didn't have the 1 lower year.

Of course, HAwks won a cup with Toews and Kane on ELC's... no reason for them to take the lower 1st year

EDIT: or did you mean team CAP? They signed 1 year apart. Not a huge difference in Salary Cap

He'll sign before arbitration imho.

What do you think he signs at? I'm still going with my 9 mill guess.

I'll never forget that.

It will remain the first and only time that an NHL GM has ever used a bit of hyperbole when describing a first round pick.

What the heck was Burkie thinking?

Well he sure as hell wouldn't have taken Yak first overall, and Rielly would have been battling with Murray for top d-man if he hadn't been injured, so it's not a huge stretch.

If Galy and Rielly hadn't been injured, I wouldn't have been surprised to see a top-3 of Galchenyuk, Murray, and Rielly, in any order.

I think most re-draft articles in coming years will reflect that, too.

I think he would have been 3rd at the very lowest.

and honestly, if they had him pegged as the best potential player in the draft, I completely believe it.

That isn't how ISS ranks the players. They go with the best player at that time. But as far as future value to a team, Rielly has a higher ceiling than Yak, and it was obvious from his 54 pt rookie season.

i think it's far too early and not one of the top-5 picks has proven anything yet. they're a slow-developing class. or maybe we've just been spoiled with so many high picks coming in and lightning it up right away.

Burke's never really been a fan of the Euros, so that draft comes down to Rielly vs Murray for him.

Rielly has the higher offensive potential, Murray is the better all-around player.

Not a stretch at all.

@mirtle: In person, William Nylander really doesn't look that small to me. Kadri-ish. Don't think that'll be what holds him back at all.

Yeah, it'll be the media and the stupid negative Leaf "fans" that will hold the kid back.

Eh, I don't believe they were going after too many players at this point. Like, really, were they trying to sign Vanek, Stralman or Nisk? Highly doubt that.

I'm still under the impression the Leafs brass want another homerun prospect to go with a young core. Let's say an Eichel next year. So, between Nylander, Johnson, Brown, and "Eichel" with a young group of Rielly, Gardiner, Kadri, JVR and Bernier. And in their prime vets Kessel, Phaneuf and Lupul, gives them some good deep players up front.

Don't forget the defensive prospects either. Loov, Granberg, Finn and Nilsson look really good coming up to. Perhaps I'm being the forever optimist, but the depth is starting to come along.

As a guy who watches a lot of Jets hockey I would emphatically say NO.

He's got talent but I feel he currently has way too much downside to justify paying even a moderately high asking price.

He has great straight line speed, is tough, aggressive, and goes to the net. Unfortunately that's about it. His speed is only straight line speed. He has no moves, is not a good puck handler, can't (or won't) pass, and he misses the net more often than he hits it. He has the pieces to be an effective power forward but his accuracy has to improve dramatically.

IMO he's is a selfish player with the puck and takes bad penalties at awful times and seems extremely arrogant. He doesn't seem to understand or care about how his actions affect the team. I can't see him having a positive impact in the room. He hasn't exactly been PR friendly either.

His trade value will probably never be better than it is right now. Someone will pay for potential he may never reach. If I'm the Jets and I see a good offer I take it and never look back.

I think Reinhart is proving that a name can go a long way.

Every scouting report I read about the guy screamed "jack of all trades, master of none"... all talked about how his offense "should" improve.

That's not what any team should be looking for in a top-5 pick... and if anything, it looks like his offense has taken a step back since being drafted.

It definitely is better than it has been in years, but it is still going to be a while before we can recover from decades of traded 1sts and terrible drafting. It is on the upswing though, IMO
