Point remains, Kane is a top 2-3 winger in the league. - YzermanIsTheMan

Kane and Toews are the heart and offensive core of a multiple cup winning team.
Would you pay Gaborik the same as you'd pay Kane?
Now, I understand that it makes you feel good to think that Kessel took a pay cut to remain in Toronto. But the fact is, his resume isn't as good as those 2 guys. - Pecafan Fan

That's what Chicago does right, and what makes them a threat every year. They shed the members of the supporting cast that want too much, and let the youngsters that have been training for that role step in, while their key players stay constant.
I think Toronto's trying to do something similar... they just overestimated Clarkson. But a look at their signings this year- and you'll see a bunch of short-term contracts for supporting guys like Santorelli that will likely be replaced by younger guys next year, while the top-6 guys (JVR, Kessel, Lupul... Bozak .....Clarkson) are signed long term. And the supporting guys who wanted big $$? Bolland, Kulemin? Gone. - Feeling Glucky?
Explains why they offered Bolland a long term, big money deal. |

I don't think Kessel took a big pay cut to stay with the Leafs. While he's a fantastic player, I don't think he's equal to those guys, 1M less is fair. And then he was signed a season earlier under a lower cap number, so another mill off is fair.
And no, I wouldn't pay Gaborik the same as Kane, because I don't believe he'll be as valuable a piece going forward. |

I could easily think of 10 players better than Kane. Toews deserves it, but I don't think Kane does.. Just my opinion. - Arctic_AARDVARK
With no Kane Chicago would have no Cups. |

If you put 4 beers in me, I'd happily argue that you could substitute Kessel for Kane and the 'hawks would still have two cups.
Toews is the straw that stirs that drink. |

If I was the 'hawks, I'd put a contract in front of Toews and have him fill in the numbers.
I'm not as sold on Kane - don't get me wrong, I think he's world-elite - but in a perfect world, I wouldn't pay him as much. But as we know, it's not a perfect world, and it seems these guys have some sorta bromance agreement to get the same contracts. What'evs.
Good teams lock up their superstars. - Atomic Wedgie
Either way they had to sign both. It's the only legitimate option without being thrown through the wringer. The complimentary guys are not easy to come by, but certainly much more readily replaceable than Toews or Kane. Now if they think some guys (Saad for instance) can take a step forward - guys like Hossa and Sharp, who are looking to re-up a fatty contract, become expendable. With those guys you can trade for a very good prospect/draft picks and continue to develop those already in the mix. |
