Michael Stuart: Was Anton Stralman the Smartest July 1st Signing?
- Michael_Stuart

Good thing there is Crosby blog up or the trolls would be over here.

It's not a awesome signing, but it is a good one that we needed to make. I don't give a damn about offensive numbers from a defenseman (as good as they are) compared to keeping the other team from getting a sniff at our net. We have plenty of offensive D talent in Hedman, with lesser but still good in Garrison and Carle. Most likely the Bolts will carry 8 defenseman:
Hedman Garrison
Carle Stralman
Brewer Gudas

The numbers clearly show that to be false. His CF% is better away from Staal than with Staal. Staal was a drag on Stralman.
- Michael_Stuart

Was Staal the drag or were the type of minutes Staal plays the drag? Regardless, it would at worst mean Stralman was significantly better than the other partners Staal played most with.

Question, is your chart only deals that are 3 years +?
Because Gilbert isn't there, and I'm a pretty big fan of that signing.

Michael, what is WOWY CF? I've been seeing the WOWY a lot and have no idea what that stands for.

This year's smartest signings IMHO are the cheap 1-year deals that landed Brad Richards and Christian Ehroff. High-quality players for a fraction of the price and commitment.

Shoot. Should have included him. I just worked off this list: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/feature/?id=25880

Don't know why he's not included.

I loved that signing too!

Leo Komarov is the best signing of the year, he's Crosby, Lemieux, Gretz, Lindros and Gordie Howe in one.

Guaranteed playoffs spot for the Leafs with him leading the charge.

No prob just wondering. Pretty much everyone in our division outside of TB and Montreal failed to improve IMHO. I mean, Buffalo probably got better but at best they are probably going from hot garbage to kind of bad. The East as a whole really didn't do much.

The Stralman signing is pretty good, but if you guys would have just kicked in an extra million per year you could have had Brooks Orpik

OOOOH ok gotcha, so they use that to compare linemates/defensive pairings, i assume. What's the website that has all of these charts, if someone wanted ot go and check out some of this stuff on their own?

Yeah, exactly! You can use it to see how players performed with certain linemates and without certain linemates.

This is the best site for WOWY stuff: http://stats.hockeyanalysis.com/index.php

i think the Leafs improved but only marginally. they have better depth in their bottom 6 which was a black hole last year. but i still think they're a poorly constructed team overall.

All this talk that Stralman is better then Staal is complete garbage. Stralman was sitting on his couch waiting for an NHL offer then the Rangers had a bunch injuries and they signed him. He played well for the Rangers but is he really worth 4.5 million per? I personal think he is not but the market was thin on defensemen and he was able to take advantage of it. Only time will tell if this good signing. I think it is solid signing but the best of free agency no

I don't think where you come from has any impact on what kind of player you are. Marty St. Louis was cast aside by Calgary. Now he's a hall of fame player. That's an extreme example.

The Lightning fans are gonna love him. He will help you win alot of games.

All those statistics mean nothing to me, but watching him play, he is very steady, and makes a great first pass

Good signings for both teams but 1 year deals put each player and each team in the same predicament next offseason where the teams have to fill the same hole. It's hard to compare a "core" signing FA with another signing a 1 year deal

Just asking not saying I would or wouldn't....

No, I wouldn't.

Drouin is probably the top prospect, with Andrei Vasilevskiy sitting a close second.
