Here is what we see if we look at the playoff rosters of the LA Kings cup team thins past season. And the Blackhawks team who won the year before.

Kings had 12 drafted players, 7 players acquired by trade, and 4 players signed as Free Agents

Chicago had 13 drafted players, 5 players acquired by trade, and 5 players signed as free agents.

Pretty damn similar in makeup.

For which Cup teams though? LA has never had to heavily unload like the Hawks have.

What's the relative value of peanuts to ounces of pocket lint?
- jmatchett383

6 mil will be peanuts in 3 years, pocket lint in 13.

Have that guy who likes to divide help us out...

I'm gonna go home and bang my wife.

Which means, I'm gonna go home, ask my wife is she wants to bang, get rejected, and find 2 minutes of alone time.

Aw, who am I kidding...1 1/2 minutes should do.

See, I'm not so much disagreeing with you as much as I am thinking that you're ignoring the fact that the Kings make splashes to contend. They traded for Richards and Carter who are both were signed to deals that go past 7 years (I'm not sure when they expire in this point in time) but they also just re-signed Marian Gaborik to a lengthy deal.

Now as far as signing long term deals, I just mentioned Gaborik, Carter and Richards have one. Brown was signed to a long one last summer. Doughty and Quick are locked up. Williams is up in a year, Kopitar will get a new deal and he's up in 2 years.

Regardless of what you may think I'm debating. LA still signs players to long term deals. I'm also sure they consider Richards, Carter etc apart of their core no matter who drafted them. They're under contract with the LA Kings as it stands.

- SuperSchennBros

It is a little different when you sell high on players like Carter and Richards and get the return that we got for them. Every player that came back in the deal is out playing the players that were traded. Those trades were absolute steals because of two great forwards that we drafted.

Edit: And it still doesn't solve the high cost FA dman problem.

Am I just being a homer by thinking Giroux is better than Kane? I was thinking that his deal is really good compared to Kane's.

I'll bite on what you are selling.

I think its a turd idea. If what you are suggesting is not trading Simmonds for Ekblad was a bad move. I am a strong re-building, and organic growth guy in relation to this team.

However I am not that crazy to realise players like Giroux don't come around every day. You sell off all the higher tier talent you have now, and you essentially kiss his prime good-bye. Not something I want to do with injury questions in my head as is. Has be a balance of trying to bring up young D, but keeping some talent around to not be 5 years away from competing. I see them 3-4 away as is. All goes good. We can be realistically talking about cup hopes in those years.

- flyer_nutter

Wayne Simmonds id my favourite player on the team. Keeping him was a great idea.

The confusion now comes from words being put in my mouth. Some suggesting that I hate the current direction of the team, which I never once said. I was perfectly fine with the draft but a handful of guys have placed words in my mouth saying that I don't.

I can't disagree with this but it doesn't mean Brayden Schenn, Wayne Simmonds, Jake Voracek and Steve Mason cannot be apart of our core because we didn't draft them.

Not denying anything here, but I- as a forward- took offense (no pun intended) to that adage that claimed something along the lines of "Goalies are (frank)ing insane. No one else is crazier than a goalie since they choose to step in front of pucks flying at 75+ mph"

I would have taken a run at Heatley. I think there is some juice left to squeeze out of him. A Heatley-Getzlaf-Perry line could be dangerous.

Both great players. But this just shows how deals and salaries escalate. What's considered an overpayment today, is a bargain in a few years. The Flyers have Giroux for the next 8 seasons at 8.275M. If this is a sign of what's to come, that will be a fricken bargain in a few years.

The Math doesn't seem right because using just the Hawks as an example, they've had a revolving door of players since 2010, while hanging on to their top guns of Toews, Kane, Keith, Sharp, Hossa and Seabrook. Not saying your wrong.

The thing is more about acquiring players on entry level or bridge deals that can play on the cheap.

Almost as bad as Giroux not being in his "prime" in a few years will be that will be that Voracek Schenn and Couts will be making a lot more money.

i've always said dmen are crazier because they block shots. being weird and being crazy are very different things. also, to be fair, that phrase came around a long time ago when goalie gear was significantly less protective...no masks, so it was a reasonable thing to say. it's a little different now. that said, it still takes balls to stand there and get blasted, despite being protected. you can still get hurt. the mental aspect of failure is also significantly higher on a goalie compared to any other player. it's not even close. for people who rip on goalies i say stand in a goalie's skates for even one game, and then talk to me. to me, this is where the "crazy" label applies to goalies...to willingly subject yourself to that kind of scrutiny, it takes something.
