Two recent goalie contracts..... Ryan Miller just signed for six. Reports suggest that Schneider will sign for the same amount. Crow is better than either. Still waiting for someone to offer some evidence that CC would have signed for less than $6M.
.

- mohel

Miller WAS better than both, around 2010 his performance was better than the best that either CC or Schnieder have shown in their careers. His play has declined since then. In this market 6 might be an overpay, might not.

As for Schneider, he and CC are pretty close. CC has been able to play behind better teams and better D corps. Schneider has been screwed around by management of 2 teams, behind Roberto in VAN and Marty in NJ. He was clearly better than Marty last year, and the whole VAN thing was a fiasco of epic proportions.

I'm interested to see how he'll do as the #1.

Hossa as player/ asst.coach! Can we move his contract and make him the highest paid coach in a couple years? Is that scenario covered in the CBA?

I think $10.8 Million means no more cups. It may mean a Selke here or a Hart there, but it does not bring team glory to Chicago. I always figured I would be lucky if I saw the cup in Chicago once in my life. I guess seeing it twice makes me twice as lucky. Maybe after their rumored 8-year deals are up...

Enjoy your millions, wonder twins. Hope the Plague of the Penguin Problem (superstars with no one to back them up) doesn't mean more injuries for you, because you're going to have to earn those salaries with more playing time to meet the expectations that accompany them.

The clock is ticking on Sharp and Seabrook and probably Shaw as well... I'm sure we'll all regret their losses sooner rather than later.

- fourfeathers

if the cap is at 80 million plus in a few year Toews and Kane will still be in their prime....Saad will just be entering it....etc.....it certainly doesn't make them also-rans in the league.

A reminder to those who think the Kompon news will solve the problems of the Hawks PP.... Said Power Play was CRAP before he got here.
- mohel

What? In the 2010 playoffs the PP was literally unstoppable. In 2010-2011 the PP was top 5. They had one bad year, Kompon came in, bad year, top 10 this year. Don't see how its crap

Good points. My main point is that $6M is the standard number for non-superstar goalies. Crow's cap hit on his new deal, which doesn't start until next season, is about what it should be. My own opinion is that Crow is better than Miller or Schneider.

Kompon has been here for two years. The PP was crap the year before he got here (the year they lost to PHX), at least. I didn't say it has always been crap - I said it was crap before he got here, and I think it was.

If those two don't make it and are gone - who's your defensive line-up going forward 3/4/5 years?

They have to make it.

- StLBravesFan

Dahlbeck will but Clendenning may not be affordable even if Bowman wants to re-sign. Clendenning still is quite likely not going to be perceived as able to handle a regular turn on defense. So with other kids developing at his position, he is difficult to pay and fit in under the salary cap. He may refuse AHL assignment, anyway, after next season. It would be time to let him fly...and he will get his wings clipped elsewhere. Best case scenario for him might well be splitting time between the NHL and his team's farm club.

Reminds me of a talented kid I coached in baseball. Could throw hard, could even throw a knuckleball. But couldn't throw strikes consistently. Talented but just short in his game overall.

I, for one, had no expectation of $8m. I believe $9.5-10M is a generous discount. $10.8M is a handicap to the team that should/could be avoided. This may be about Brisson and the NHLPA wanting to reset the market.

And, if Toews and Kane reach the open market I think each could get $12.5m easily. Probably even more.

- tredbrta

8-8.5 would be a discount for their team not 10.

10 IMO is being selfish.

Taking discounts means the players try to help out the organization and win championships not handcuff an organizations future.

I hope they sign and stay with the hawks but not for 9.5+ it's just too risky when GMs have important RFAs and UFAs to sign down the line.

Adam Oates available for the Powrr Play ??

Was Oates a good pp coach BEFORE he had Ovechkin slapping one-timers in on an almost nightly basis?

I think Dahlbeck makes it but Clendening doesn't. I also think John's will make it. That's 2 NHL defensemen from this crop. If Rundblad doesn't make it I could maybe see Clendening take his spot. Regardless, I think if the Hawks get two of the defensemen to work out, we could team them up with some cheap vet's to shore up or defense. Maybe TVR can do something? We also have a good amount of players in Sweeden/college still.

Brett Hull scored a ton of goals with Oates as his center on and off the PP. You could say he needs a guy who can pull the trigger like OV or BH and no beef there. But the guy understands the offensive side of the game for sure. I think he'd be a good choice. I would think he knows Q from St. Louis and that seems to count.

A lot.

As a Blues fan, I really wish Oates wasn't such a turd. He basically gave the Blues no choice into getting rid of him, and Hull and Oates were amazing. That shouldn't have ended so soon.

Regarding Kompon.. LA dumped after they lost to us in the WCF due to dreadful PP which he was in charge of. I'm betting it won't matter who comes in to replace him. You'll see the same back door scheme. Good PP get lotzo movement. Hawks just don't move it enough. Would like to see a 2 man in the crease setup like LA does. Shaw and Benny Smith?? Two guys who aren't afraid to stand in there and have sticks to deflect shots from the point. Kane and Hoss and the edge with 7 ready to bomb it in the middle.

You're correct...

Kompon was an easy target...certainly easier than placing the blame on the guys who actually are on the ice.

The new hire will be blamed for this years bad PP by Thanksgiving.

A player is "worth" what he can get on the open market.

Presumably, some team would pay Toews and Kane $10MM each per year - therefore, the value of their services is $10MM per year - or $10.8 or $9.5 or some number in that range.

Why is it "selfish" for a player to want to get full value for his services - life everyone else in a free market, capitalist economy?

How come nobody - in this discussion - has yet said that the owners were selfish for pushing the players to take only 50% off HRR instead of 52% or 54%? Or for charging market value for tickets and concessions?

No, it's only the players who are selfish for wanting full value.

I doubt Adam Oates is the answer. First, does anyone really think Q would let someone change the power play scheme? Two, Oates was a horrible coach with the Caps. He was insisting on playing 4th line guys with Ovechkin, benching star players, just a total mess. I know he wouldn't be in charge of any of that here but it leads to some real questions about his maturity as a coach. He ripped players publicly as well late in the year. Seems to be a total jackazz.
