There is a discount and then a market Leaf discount which salary demands are higher than anywhere else.. - LeafMan
Thing is the reason we didn't get him was that Florida's offer was 800k better BECAUSE OF THE TAXES. Meaning we offer more than 5M per season. Man did we even dodge a bullet. Over 10M for Bolland and Clarkson to fill out the 3rd line is just scary. |

How much does the guy in 36th and 39th get paid.
I just checked...Franson was 42nd in D scoring.
41st - Jack Johnson - $5M
43rd - Andy Greene - $3M
As simple and wrong as looking at it this way is, you may well be right on.
- Woderwick
Petry just signed for $3mil. He putsup like 1/2 the pts Franson does. The Leafs don't have much leverage at all on their 2 arb cases. |

Nope, he isn't. But I don't blame him for taking it one bit. - prock
nor do I....but when stuff like that comes out "$800K was the difference" and he said he's take a discount to stay, then he's full of poop.
As I said, I'm glad the Leafs didn;t pay it. |

Which is why I don't get all the anger. He went for a pay day. I don't blame him for that one bit. And it's better this way for the Leafs anyway, so c'est la vie. |

Why doesn't the NHL take taxes into account when calculating a team's salary cap since the teams have no control over the taxes where they reside? Otherwise it gives teams in taxless or low tax areas unfair advantages when attracting free agents and negotiating with players. - Wendel_Rocked
Yes Florida has no state income tax, but you still have to pay FEDERAL income tax. When you salary is as high as an NHL player, you end up paying 40% in taxes when all is said and down, and then you need to think about the fact that you don't get free healthcare with that ....
Ive actually looked into this a fair bit, and in terms of taxes, its better to be in Canada.
Here is a US tax Calculator for the keeners:

This, can't take a chance on being stuck with Franson after arbitration.
a second rounder would be ideal. |

Good glad he didnt sign here at those numbers, same with Brian Boyle..had enough of these 20 - 35 point guys acting like they the cats meow - PinkSock
That's because these quality 20-35 points are what get you into the playoffs and then success in the playoffs |

Tampa and Florida are the KHL of the NHL.
No taxes. Will learn how to leverage that in all negotiations going forward.
If one of them ever becomes a winning team, then say goodbye to all top tier free agents. - ILoveLamp
Tennessee doesn't have state income tax either. I wonder why it never gets discussed when referring to them. Nashville is a great city too, so much fun to be had. Do players really think the Panthers have a better org than the Preds? It baffles me. |

Nonis offered Boyle 4 years 10 M... If Sabers don't sign Ott looks like he will be a Leaf for 3-4 years. At around 2.75-3.25 M a season |
