In Canada you pay taxes where you work, provincially, until the end of the year when you pay in the province you reside. SO...you get it back if you pay more in a different province during the year.
Does it not work the same down there? - LeftCoaster
pretty sure the check comes from tampa which is 100% state free taxes

he could have played in front of friends and family for 5 mil a year (shocking for a #3 center! ) but chose the extra cash to head to a lottery team.
I knew all along.bolland wasnt gonna stay, what a bunch of bs about wanting to stay and willing to take a hometown discount.
How long till the Panthers discuss buying him out? I say 2 years - GardinerExpress
no they'll trade him to Detroit. |

No, I have a few buddies that play in the league and they get taxed where the game is played.
ex. play in Philly one night your game salary is tax based on the state taxes in Pennsylvania.
Salary is paid out based on games played during the salary period. |

Florida had something going last year. Then they go and sign all these overpayments to long term contracts - JVR_42_PK81

OK. So we need to spend to the cap floor let's sign all these players to long term contracts and overpay them. |

The possibility of a trade involving team captain Dion Phaneuf appears unlikely
thanks for ruining my Tuesday Mike - Adam_The_Golf
I agree with the Mike stating that it is unlikely but I disagree with him using Rosie Dimanno as a source for anything.

Stralman, Jokinen, Bolland... all overpaid and all are instantly bad contracts just like Clarkson.
Boyle would have been a nice to have but no one is crying over a 4th line C
Leafs did about as good as they possibly could have in this Free agency class. |

So, he said he would take a significant discount to play with the Leafs and then "Thun indicated that the Leafs offer was “not literally close in any way, shape or form until Noon on July 1” and that the Panther’s offer(5 years, $27.5 Million) was $800,000 better per season than Toronto’s final offer"
So, he wasn't willing to sign for an $800,000 difference, despite saying he would take a significant discount.
And don't use that tax BS because it simply isn't something 93% of the league can offer. He's greedy and trying to hide behind it. what a tool - ILoveLamp
Sure, 93% of the league can't offer it, but it still makes it probably in the region of a $2M discount to play with the Leafs vs the Cats. Pretty significant. |

How much does the guy in 36th and 39th get paid.
I just checked...Franson was 42nd in D scoring.
41st - Jack Johnson - $5M
43rd - Andy Greene - $3M
As simple and wrong as looking at it this way is, you may well be right on.

I have lost a lot of respect for Bolland. He doesn't care about winning anymore. In his mind he has won two cups, an OHL championship, and a Memorial cup so now all he wants is money. - JVR_42_PK81
You have to remember that this is these guys livelihood, and it doesn't always last long. I, for one, don't blame them for taking the extra couple of million when they can, because come 35 years old, they can't make that anymore. So, for guy like Bolland, they have one chance, and really ONLY one chance, to cash in, and this was his only chance. I get taking a discount and all, but chalking up $10M to $15M when that's possibly 20 to 30% of what he'll make in his entire hockey career? I wouldn't do it either.
And really, if winning was number 1 on his agenda, he wouldn't be on the Leafs either. You can't get all angry that he wouldn't sign with the Leafs claiming "he doesn't care about winning". |

Agent talking poop to make his client look good.I'm glad they didn't massively overpay for Bolland. He's not worth that much. - burn
Nope, he isn't. But I don't blame him for taking it one bit. |

I didn’t think he’d stay either. He always gave me the feeling that he didn’t care THAT much about being a Leaf. He almost looked disappointed in getting traded here. |

Canadian hockey players playing in the states have a tough time being declared a non-resident according to the CRA. Therefore, most Canadian born players are still paying income tax back home in Canada |

Why doesn't the NHL take taxes into account when calculating a team's salary cap since the teams have no control over the taxes where they reside? Otherwise it gives teams in taxless or low tax areas unfair advantages when attracting free agents and negotiating with players. |
