These are excuses. A 7 million dman should be excelling in these situations not folding like a cheap lawn chair. I think most agree he is overpaid, but serviceable. That doesnt excuse him for being a terrible captain. For the young players on this team to grow, they need to get rid of this personality.

Yes, but he didn't name himself captain. Burke jumped the gun big time on that one.
I agree he could be better with better D around him, but he does play too much- even the best players make mistakes if they are out too long... Cut his minutes, surround him with some better D (not to mention more defensive minded forwards would help too) and watch his game excel.

The Sharks have expressed interest in Steve Ott? He'll fit in perfect with Raffi Torres, Mike Brown, Adam Burish and John Scott... but we must sign Brenden Morrow first!

Very few superstars in the league that San Jose's gang of enforcers/agitators won't be able to annoy.

I don't see Thornton or Marleau waiving their NTC's for Carolina. I could see Jumbo waiving for the Rangers though.

Someone must explain how a thornton for staal trade would
Make ANY sense for the canes.

I agree with the terrible captain and abit overpaid but to say he should be excelling in those situations is mind boggling!
Excelling in what situations, the systems and the team defence that the Leafs play around him? That was horrible last year!Im not sure if you put any d-man in the league in that situation they do any better.
He makes alot of mistakes and im not sure i want him to mentor the young guys thats for sure,i would be ok trading him,but you have to give him some help.Real help!

Only if you're dumb enough to forget the question you asked. He is with you.

Then again, you do make a good point. Rick Nash ....Playoffs...non sequitur indeed.

The Caps should go after Thornton. Trade Green, Johansson a prospect and a #2 pick for Thornton and a #3 pick.
- 30yearcapfan

I think the Caps should target Joe, should he choose to waiver. But, Laich and/or Brouwer needs to be one of the pieces going in that trade.

Dion needs to go somewhere (a good team) where he does not have to be "the man" He will flourish, if the team can live with the cap hit.
Dion just has to realize it.

Talk about whether or not a Staal for Thornton deal makes sense...what about this Marleau for Ward swap we keep reading about?!

It doesn't. Staal is younger, has a cup ring, and is playing with his brother. Both players have NTC. Deal even if were accepted both players would need to accept it. Eric won't leave Jordan and uproot his family unless there is a total rebuild coming which according to Francis and Karmanos isn't happening. It makes zero sense for Carolina and it won't happen. Marleau for Ward would be interesting. Makes a lot of sense for Carolina, but not much for San Jose. I've commented on that trade in a previous Ek post about it and explained why it makes zero sense for the Sharks. They would have to receive a decent amount with Ward, probably 2 prospects and a top 3 rd pick (my guess second) then eat part of Ward's contract which defeats the purpose of getting rid of him. My guess is the reason no one is talking about it is because both trades make no sense from one side or the other without additional pieces being known.
