Whats the one dimension? Just that he isnt the greatest defensive forward?
- peddy-93

its weird that fans want advanced stats to show deeper player values, yet still believe offense and defense are the only dimensions in a players game.

i am not a big fan of carlyle.. and he's known around the league as a pretty aggressive task master.

his coaching philosophy hasnt changed with the times either. however, i wouldnt be shocked to see a different approach this season

cause the door will be hitting his ass as he leaves.

I'd save the cap space and keep JVR. Oh well.

And I'd like to see what Kadri can bring over the next year. Kadri's contract demands will decide his fate here depending on the year he has.

Yeah, I think saying offense is just "One-dimension" is silly. There are at most 1 or 2 wingers in the entire NHL that are better passers than Phil. This guy is not just a goal scorer anymore.

Leaf prospect camp underway this week at MCC. William Nylander amongst the 29 prospects on hand.

We live in a world where Nik Kulemin is considered a "Two-Way" forward. If Phil played anywhere else, his "One-dimension" would not be nearly as big of a deal.

I personally think defensive play has become ridiculously overrated. I've never seen a time it's tougher to score a 5 on 5 goal. Offensive skills cannot simply be taught.

when I read Phil is one dimensional I have flashes of plays Phil got back to disrupt clean breakaways, happened a few times.

Let's hope he brought his hair. That "Nylander Mop" will be the biggest craze ever.

It sucks when you're tired and you can't give your 100% for 21 minutes a game.
- Pecafan Fan

I don't really know if it applies to JVR, who had his best year on record, but mentally you could be trying your hardest, and your body just can't keep up.

Yeah I really think the whole forward having defensive value is over used. It's important no doubt, but when you have a player with Phil's offensive skills, the defensive side isn't as important.

There are guys in other markets who are so much worse than Phil defensively. He's the poster boy because he plays on the Leafs and "The Trade".

Yup. Because he has the puck so much and can hit you in so many areas.

Agreed, you also have to take in to account Dion has been his entire defensive presence as a leaf. komo and schenn were his elite shutdown guys

it would be cool, show more depth of the organization for a fan base dying for hockey coverage already.

Which is why I don't understand why Phaneuf recieves such slander from everyone. He has the highest QoC in the league, and his defensive zone starts are way high.

That's why I'm hoping the Leafs can get a pairing to play other teams top lines and have Phaneuf and Gardiner together playing more freely. Like what Chicago does with Keith.

If they're not airing, they should really consider doing so. Lots of Leaf fans would love to see what our prospects got, especially since we see so little of them during the season.

Probably has a top 5 shot of all forwards in the NHL. Leaf fans cry because he doesn't play a two way game like a bottom 6er

Yup. Dion has been given a really hard job and is leaned-on way too much on the Leafs.

Also has one of the best playmaking abilities amongst wingers in the NHL.
