I disagree. The NHL is changing and having a guy with almost no offensive abilities play a Centre position in your lineup is a problem. Why? Well, if the centre ahead of him in the depth chart is injured, you need him to step up.
McClement had the chance to step up and provide some offense, and failed. While doing so, he also failed at defense, which was supposed to be his specialty. - ILoveLamp
well I like to think they have addressed the issue of Center depth in case a couple go down.
JM was never an offensive player...but having someone who is a PK specialist is useful..he was very good 2 seasons ago..and its possible he returns to being useful

Randy Carlyle is a good coach. He is better than most in the NHL despite his criticism lately. I can't see it being that. It's just most players are too much of a female dog to play in the biggest hockey market in the NHL. There is a lot of pressure playing for the leafs especially after last year. Most players aren't up for the challenge. It really pisses me off how much Canadians don't want to play in Toronto or for any Canadian city for that matter. It seems like Americans and Europeans have no problem playing in Canada but MOST not all Canadians can't play in Canada. - JVR_42_PK81

I'd say it's a combination of things.
1. Carlyle does have something to do with it. Every player that leaves has nothing but bad things to say about him. When Anaheim canned him, they looked like their team was abysmal, but with the same lineup, Boudreau made them look like a contender.
2. Free agents (the good ones) want to compete and win. That's why they are good players. They have that internal drive to succeed. We're not a playoff team, and therefore, why would someone sign with us?
3. We weren't going to pay ridiculous prices for people. Bolland wanted to stay, but for $5.5M? I'm glad he's gone.
When we make it to the playoffs, and do it consistently, then people will consider signing with us. |

ya but Bozak and JVR do a great job killing penalties as well, and they add offence.
I'm hoping Kontiola, or maybe someone else will step up, grind the boards, get the puck out, and maybe score once and awhile. |

i am not a big fan of carlyle.. and he's known around the league as a pretty aggressive task master.
his coaching philosophy hasnt changed with the times either. however, i wouldnt be shocked to see a different approach this season |
