Just to make sure I'm understanding this, after August 15, any team can sign Hayes and Chicago gets nothing, right?
So then the idea is that Chicago will either trade his rights or allow a team, prior to August 15, to try to sign Hayes and the compensation going back to the Hawks would be a 2015 2nd round pick? - wolfhounds
Chicago gets a compensation pick, 24th of the 2nd round. The team that signs Hayes does not give anything up though.

Especially since the Hawks landed Rasmussen(sp).
I dont see Chi not reaching a deal with this kid.Kane and Towes will carry huge cap hits and theyll need cheap talent on the roster. If they cant, id love for the flyers to snatch him
edit...this tablet blows - KINGKENZO
I'd be shocked if the Hawks sign Hayes. He's refused to sign so far, reportedly wants guaranteed NHL playing time that he hasn't earned. There's no reason for the kid to sign with the Hawks now, he'll just wait a month and find some team willing to give him what he wants, but it will likely be a non-contender. I'd be leery of any kid who demands that, no matter what team I was running.

Yup, and no matter what the GM says in July/August, it's what the coach thinks in October/November that really matters. |

Yep. It's like the NFL's compensation picks. They're just created and sandwiched in between the other teams.
Another note though, I highly doubt Hayes' rights are traded. The reason is, the Hawks know they get the 24th pick in the 2nd round if he leaves. To trade him they'd want something more than that, or at least a known commodity, i.e. a player they value more than the pick. If they traded him to the Flyers for a 2 there is a fair to good chance the Flyers pick will be later than the 24th. So why make that trade? Unless it's something like a 2nd and another pick if the player is signed, like say a 4th rounder, which I could see happening.

Hey Bill, why tarde for anything.
Flyers call Kevin Hayes' agent - if they like you, he signs with you.
Don't make it more complicated than that, because of the kid wants to sign elsewhere you need him to want Philly, and wasting a pick on acquiring rights is pointless... |

And if Chicago has a 2nd already, that would make 31 picks in a round? That doesn't sound right to me. Not saying it's not true, because I have no idea. |

You have to assume that any offer would have to have greater value than the compensatory pick, which could be an early 2nd-rounder in a deep draft (PHX got #35 in the Blake Wheeler thing).
I almost doubt that any team will pony up that much to grab the kid, who's basically had one outstanding season... I expect Florida will probably take the biggest run at him Aug 15... his bro's under contract there and Tallon has a fondness for poaching Hawks property. - Tomahawk
NO It works like this The Hawks and only the hawks get the 54th pick in the draft.
The kid was drafted in the first at 24, 30 picks later is the pick the leagues gives the hawks.
If you draft a kid first overall and you offer him a contract and he says no, you get the first pick in the second round slot 31.
Rule applies to only first rounders and the team who does the selecting gets a second rund at the same spot...making the second round 31 players.

The sound you were hearing doesn't matter-here are the words.
It has already happened.
Cherepanov was drafted by the New York Rangers in the first round of the 2007 entry draft. He was selected 17th overall. Earlier this season he died, while playing a game in the KHL. The Rangers never had a chance to sign him. When a team fails to sign a first round draft pick the CBA gives them a compensatory draft pick. If the pick was 17th overall in the first round, the compensatory pick will be the 17th selection in the second round. Since Cherepanov died, the Rangers will not sign him. Therefore the Rangers are getting a compensatory draft pick. The New York Rangers will have the 17th selection in the second round. 47th overall 2009

The biggest improvement Hextall can make with the Flyers is on the Phantoms. For all the things I do like About Homer, the management of our farm team over the years has been the biggest disappointment. I love the idea of doing the Bull Durham for the the AHL prospects and bringing in some career tweeners to do what it is they do and serve that mentor/callup role that they do. These guys perform an important function and you never know, can be called up and become extremely effective in the right situations. They constantly show what it takes to be a pro in this league and how hard you have to work to keep at it. Basically saying, if you want to play in the next league, you may have the talent, but you have to outwork me to get there.
I love that Hexy is looking at how we develop our talent and not just who, or how we draft. Living in LA, To me that's what he did right in on the west coast. He sheltered a lot of the talent playing today by letting them develop slowly. It's why I think the big team is what it is, and maybe even Laughton is going to start with the Phantoms, at least in the beginning. |
