Steve Simmons, Sun Media: My thumb is down to the passivity of NHL general managers, who are sometimes too polite for their own good. The GMs missed out on the opportunity to make an offer to restricted free agent PK Subban and now that Subban has filed for arbitration, his rights are protected by Montreal for the coming season. But if I'm a GM, I would have made a monstrous offer to Subban, more than $10 million a year, and not just because he was the only game changing player available. I look at this two ways. If I throw huge money at Subban, I have a shot to get him - albeit it's a long shot. And if Montreal matches, which is usually the way these things go, then I'm messing up their payroll. Either way, I have nothing to lose. Even if the GMs don't agree.

i've never understood why more teams dont offer rfa's offer sheets. hell, for the reason alone to screw over other teams cap. between 3,364,391 to 5,046,585 is only a 1st and 3rd. teams that are strapped for cash can't really match, other teams are close to the cap. Gudbranson, Kulikov, Johansen, kreider, smith and tatar are all options that fit in that range. if they sign and their team doesnt match, great. if the team matches, well then they are stuck most likely paying more then they wanted

Wait...so you're saying there's a chance at a trade?
- weirdoh

Yes, if the Leafs send prospects the other way. Or a
decent roster player.

That's the dumbest thing from you yet. Wouldn't it make sense if he's basing it off of LA, Chicago, PItts and Boston?

GIve them 4 straight years of 1st rounders because those teams are built to get into and past the 1st round of the playoffs.

- weirdoh

they don't have the cap space to throw around 10-11m contracts, the other teams do

also, it's obvious why offer sheets are rarely done as tool pointed out, who wants to lose 4 firsts?

Even then, none of those teams can afford to toss 10 million at him. They're all scrounging for cap space as it is.

The Oilers must be celebrating daily over the fact the Sabres matched their offer sheet to Vanek. Or at least they should. Well, if they didn't stink they might.

They wouldn't have guys like Hall, RNH ....forget the names, but 2 or 3 of their prized 1st rounders thats for sure.

i can only see bottom feeder teams offering up huge contracts to get a star cornerstone player to build around, although losing all those picks is a huge deterrent

His thinking is that the Habs would be forced to sign him.

But, dafuq if they didn't?

Damn, 4 1sts.

So who knows?

- weirdoh

well if its a game changer, someone who immediately makes the team a contender, like a stamkos, tavares, pietrangelo, subban (which i hate to admit), then those are your chances to steal those guys. had we signed stamkos for 10 mil, 4 1st's would be in the 20 range anyways. how often do they really pan out?

I would do it for Stamkos. Not for Subban though. Just my opinion.

one player isn't gonna solve all the problems, but will help right the ship

not sure a team that drafted 8 will be in the 20's one year after adding one of those players

maybe year 2 or 3

stamkos, tavares and pietrangelo we had a chance to offer sheet and never used it. yea i wouldn't want to do 10 mil for subban either. if it was 8 mil then compensation is only 2 1st's 1 2nd and 1 3rd. not bad to be honest.

leafs drafted 8 this year. you're telling me if they had tavares or stamkos next year they wouldn't be drafting in the 20's next year?

it would be a huge step in the right direction

you can get to 8,410,975 for only that compensation. that'll handicap lots of teams, and bankrupt the lower ones

not saying they become immediate cup contenders, but having tavares or stamkos, then easily deal kadri to get a better winger for the top 6

the flyers offer sheeting weber was a good one, cause the team was good to begin with and losing the picks in the mid twenties wasn't gonna hurt them at all
