My guess is that they have a deal with Hossa, that if he wants to hang them up, it will be claimed that it's because of his disc problem in his back. That way, no buyout, no recap penalty, Hossa gets every dime and gets put on LTIR (just like Marc Savard and Chris Pronger) and his cap hit gets freed up.

Sure sounds like circumventing the CBA to me. I'm sure the NHL wouldn't look into that at all.

Non hockey post, but:

How can a pitcher with these stats not be on the all-star team (even tho he missed several starts):

8-1
ERA = 2.16
WHIP = 0.87
WAR for 13 starts = 3.7

Yep, it sure does. But, he has a history of disc issues, so it's not outside the realm of possibility.

We have gone over this too often...

I wrote about this early on last year...The time to part ways with Hossa was while there were compliance buyouts to use and that window has slammed shut.

There were millions of reasons to do so and many reasons, like winning more Cups not to do so.

This situation is locked in granite...The cap implications to buy Hossa out are too great now...LTIR and retirement also spell cap doom for now.

Hossa is still one of the best players on the team and the idea to shed the contract was dismissed when it made fiscal sense to do so.....It makes no sense today, nor in the future.

You don't get LTIR'd for having a history of disc issues.

Hawks used their allowed buyouts on Montador and Olesz, right? Yeah, those were short-term fixes when the Hoss contract is a long-term albatross.

While he continues to play at a high level it doesn't hurt quite as much but there will come a time...........

Huh? You said the league would might want to look into it if Hossa retires because of back issues. If the guy has a well noted history of having disc issues and says he can no longer play because of it, that is the end of the investigation. He goes on LTIR.

Cap Shmap.
- Ogilthorpe2

Wish it were that easy. $10.8M each is going to really make SB's job tough especially if next years' cap goes up only 5% or so.

For guy who never could play in the NHL for any length of time Jimmy Waite played a lot of hockey elsewhere...We will see.

I heard this was likely to happen but thought the gig might go to Hirsch.

So - you were in favor of a but-out of Hossa last summer?

Yep, he's gonna be a good one. Thought he kind of got pushed back a year playing right wing. This should be a big year for him.

With a doctor's concurrence - and probably an examination by a league doctor.

I don't mind the subterfuge because of the way the league, the PA, Bettman and Fehr phucked the Hawks retroactively in this contract - changing the rules governing the contract long after it was executed.

Where did I say that I was in favor of a but-out? No, I think he remains a member of the core but his contract, like a few others, will cause long-term challenges.

Wrong.

Article 50.10, Page 290: “If the League wishes to challenge the determination of a Club physician that a Player is unfit to play for purposes of (LTIR), the League and the NHLPA shall promptly confer and jointly select a neutral physician, who shall review the Club physician's determination regarding the Player's fitness to play.”

No. Not only is it Stan's job to sign these guys, he also needs to figure out a way to surround them with other high priced all-star caliber players.

If he doesn't we'll gather the villagers and storm the castle.

Unless the league appoints Dr Nick Riveria, he'll get put on LTIR.

Agreed. But if he has the bulging disc(s) and MRIs that show it, it's a done deal.

Oh so all he has to do is say "ow my back hurts" and he'll get thrown on LTIR? Got it.
